I believe that Probability Theory was the real winner today. To concede so early on yet again, stifling every ounce of urgency we probably tried to have, was just too much this time. Just like Ghana not scoring from open play in quite some time, I had thought that the chances of them scoring in the midst of play was very high, and unfortunately for us, Probability won.
Despite this, I'm still proud of the team. They managed to fight their way back into the match far more than any other side I have ever seen. The level of passion surrounding our national team over the past few days has been absolutely heartwarming, far more than I had expected. Even non-football fans were watching today. Shame we let them down. Hopefully they have gained a bit more respect for the game and for our own national team.
We lost this match as soon as our manager created the team sheet. Clark should have never been included at the start of the match, especially when Edu has done very well off the bench. Folks have said that Clark was used because he can be physical against the strong Ghanian players, but so can Edu. And the problem we have here is that Edu is good with the ball and can play it quickly when necessary, which Clark cannot do... and which hurt us badly in this match. Edu was the obvious start, yet Bob Bradley again showed himself to be quite ridiculous at times. The same can be said about Findley who could only be useful against a slow back line.
If we had to take one thing back with us from South Africa, it would be our heart. No doubt. That much we can build upon. But our mindset and tactics in starting matches has obviously not been up to par, and that is the manager's fault considering it has occurred so often. It's the typical US side... play like shit for the first 45, then turn it on. We did it in the QF's. And to achieve our goals as a footballing nation, as in reach the quarters and beyond, these failures in team mentality are not good enough. We need a manager who can sort this stuff out, even while I do give Bob Bradley credit for at least getting a good group of players going at halftime.
Players like Dempsey, Landon and Bradley have done us proud. And I thank them for their effort. Cannot wait until 2014.
