You watch it on ESPN? Man, I obviously never use the channel, but when I see their highlights on YouTube or something the quality of the commentators is always really poor.

They usually are pretty poor, except for the main guy that does US Soccer matches, JP Dellacamera. But regular ESPN commentators like Tommy Smyth who did CL for a decade are horrible. This year, they brought in Martin Tyler and a few other Brits to do the matches, but I don't rate them either.

Although, I suppose it is an improvement over Marcelo Balboa and Julie Fowdy.

They actually do a pretty good job. They even do a good job when pronouncing the names of Belgian players. It's not 100%, but they come very very close. As for the Belgian commentators, they pronounce all the Italian names right, except Criscito (they put the emphasis wrong).

i am sure they do but i can guarantee you over 90% of italians would mess that one up, but yes europeans would be more more apt at that because of familiarity and proximity, and if it's a name not familiar they will mess up just like for the espn dudes

The Italian public would mess up. No doubt about that. But the commentators (both from Italy and Belgium) work a lot on pronunciation. They get little cards that say how they should pronounce names and are schooled by native speakers. From what I've heard on Eurosport it's the same for French commentators. The English are quite poor when it comes to smaller teams, but they study the big teams as well.
