Well, my laptop was drenched in water while the power cord was plugged in and in sleep mod. It must have been sitting in water for a good 6 hours before I noticed. Now it's pretty obvious the laptop is shot barring a miracle, but how likely is it that I'll be able to recover any data from the hard drive after this scenario? I mean, the thing must have been completely drenched.

No idea, never dealt with this sort of thing. Hard drive storage is magnetic, so that probably isn't affected very much, but the circuitry on the hard drive might be shot. Unless you have a hardware geek for a friend you probably just have to take it in to a shop somewhere and get a diagnosis.

If it's porn on that hard drive , you'll download it again :D , but if it something important you better take it to some specialized repair shop , they can return data from it by replacing the damaged electronics and extract the data , as Martin said hard drive inside is very well protected (I think is in vacuum), so it should be safe.

Water, a bit tricky but the data can be saved if it only pure water. Sugar is equivalent to death.

The trick is to have a dry circuit. I am not sure the computer can be fixed if it was plugged in but your data are on the hard disk. You can either send it to a technician or try by yourself.

What should be done is the following, open the laptop, take out the harddrive and make sure it is try. That can be easy, leave it in a dry place for a few days you will be sure it is dry.

Then you need a harddisk casing where you can connect it via USB, once you do that you can read it as an external harddrive and recover your files.

This doesn't sound too difficult. Am I correct in thinking that? Is there any chance that the hard drive is actually damaged inside, or are they "water-proof?"

I mean, why pay $250-1500 to get files that only consist of papers, excel spreadsheets, awkward pictures and thousands of pirated music tracks if I can do that?

I don't think the hard drive casings are that expensive either.
