Of course it was a smart move. Maresca is not half the player of Vieira and while Appiah IMO is a decent player, he certainly is worth giving up for Vieira. Although I do think Appiah will improve over time, and when Vieira and Emerson move on you might regret giving up on Appiah because he does have a lot of potential. Perhaps in Istanbul Appiah will improve greatly, and thus far I think he has played very well next to the likes of Alex and Anelka.
As for Vieira, his form thus far this season has been impeccable, and he is probably the most complete middy in the world today. Andy told me Vieira has not set a foot wrong on the pitch yet for the Bianconeri, and from what I have seen that assessment is certainly correct. I am also impressed with the passion Vieira has shown on the pitch, and it's probably a joy for him to play for such a prestigious club and challenge for the prestigious Champions League title. With the way Juventus has played thus far, I would say the CL title is a great possibility.

Honestly, If Juve were building a team for the future. Maresca would be our best option. But Juve wanted results right away, more so, they want to capture the Champions League immediately so we brought in an established champion such as Vieira.
For me, it was a good buy. Actually, we got a bargain considering that we got him for less than 18M which is how I would appraise his value at the moment. Good thing he didn't have quite a good year in Arsenal the previous year, that shaved off a few million dollars from his tag price.

the only negative to selling maresca and appiah is that they were the only two way midfielders available to replace Vieira and Emerson.
Vieira and Emerson is the best thing since slice bread, but when you have Blasi and Giannichedda as back up, that bread suddenly becomes mouldy.
Hence, i think the club should have looked at selling others before selling both maresca and appiah.
For me, I would have kept Maresca and looked at selling a player like Zalayeta to raise the funds.
Or even sell Blasi before Maresca.
