i disagree that the mercato was bad last year, we had different objectives and the sale of those players filled those objectives
and this year our objective was to build the team again, and honestly you cant just expect to build a team in one summer, look at why inter and milan are so different, one changes constantly while the other remains the same
the only mistake we did this year was buying two very similar players ie tiago and almiron

That's my point. The objectives are different. We could land a bunch of great players in one year, but that's meaningless if they're all on the bench and we spend the season languishing for lack of any real starters or depth at a position that becomes our Achilles Heel in the standings later on. What good is a transfer strategy like Real Madrid's when they end up overloaded with 14 fabulous strikers, can't field more than 3 reasonably at a time, and they're getting their asses kicked because they have nobody covering defense?
The best measure of a transfer strategy, IMO, is how it helps adjust for the previous season's gaps -- and for player departures -- and how that helps you in the standings or in relevant tournaments.
And it's complete hindsight to suggest that we should have predicted that players like Andrade were going to split their knee cap in half.

but we're paying 2.5 M for Boumsong. and Boumsong's transfer fee was just a little less than what Barca paid for Thuram. 2.5 M more wouldn't have broken our backs for Thuram.
Had we Thuram (even this old dinosaur Thuram) we could have had a leader in the defense, solved our defensive problems to some extent and not wasted 12 million on Andrade.
