Amusing story in the paper today. A Norwegian paper was so curious about Palin they went to Alaska to check out her church. They found something of a freakshow.
It is Jesus, not the Republicans or Sarah Palin, that will save the USA from the crisis. Such is the message from the pastors in Palin's church, where homophobia, money and eternal suffering are key issues.
Around 100 people were attending this weekend, despite a visit from Colorado preacher Jayme Montera who had come to talk about miracles.
We [the journalists] were cordially received by the pastors, who consented to our attendance and note taking, but not pictures or recordings.
But after 3 hours in God's house we are left with an extraordinarily intolerant view on human beings.
Montera said of abortion "I cannot stand by and watch 50 million children be killed in abortion." Of homosexuals he said "I cannot stand by and witness how gays and lesbians behave in our country." He also said the Iraq war and the gas pipeline in Alaska are God's will.
As mayor of Wasilla, Palin tried to ban several books from the library, one of the entitled "Pastor, I'm gay", by the liberal pastor Howard Bess from the neighboring town of Palmer.
"Isn't he wonderful" [Montera, the pastor], says an old lady whose roots are from a small town in Norway. He has just told the story of a 16 year old girl called Amanda, who had been given weeks to live with a brain tumor and had miraculously been healed. We have not been able to corroborate the story, but Montera says it's well documented, so we'll have to take his word for it.
There is a wonderful diversity in Wasilla's least liberal [liberal not in the US political meaning, rather in terms of social tolerance] church. Obese men and women take part in the weekly exercise session [this is irony, he means going to church] as they sway to the music. It's almost painful to watch them trying to rise from their knees. There are also those considerably fitter, in North Face jackets looking like they're taking a nature hike after this. And a couple of teenagers looking like they were coerced by their parents, in contrast to the 20-30 individuals on stage enjoying life, Jesus, and the preacher, who cannot seem to get enough.
When the pastor asked who had had their life changed by Jesus there were few hands that didn't go up. "Those who reject Jesus will suffer for their sins and suffer eternally in a sea of flames", the church says on its website. Perhaps that explains why so many confirm their bond with Jesus.
A young man, who judging by his clothes, looks a better fit for the local "Mug Shot Saloon" comes to church late on a Saturday night and explains how he is pleased with the church's attitudes. "You know, I'm concerned that men's rights in this country aren't protected well enough", he says without a hint or irony.
According to the preacher, everyone should feel good about living in the US regardless of the election, as long as they open their eyes, their hearts, and their wallets for God. "God does not go bankrupt. God will produce more oil, if that's what it takes. Christian businesses will not suffer", says Montera who himself runs a respectable business as a traveling preacher.
"I am not worried about a financial crisis", says pastor Ed Kalnins, and asks people to donate to the church.
Even if Palin is in their hearts, their main concern in Wasilla Assembly of God isn't who the president is. "It doesn't matter who is president, as long as we are willing to accept God's will", says pastor Ed. "Amen, you guys."
