I've noticed more than before that loads of us are at uni. As such im interested in what everyone is reading and where....also be a cool place to post up articles/journals and ask for help on research stuff.

Im studying an MA in Political Communications at Cardiff and My undergrad was a Joint Honours in International Politics and Media. I am good with fear in the media, Middle Eastern conflicts and general 20th century history - specifically conflict and resolution.

Its about studying Diplomacy, PR, Propaganda and Censorship.

I am looking to write my DIS on either Censorship and Propaganda in China between 1949 and 1991.

Or,

The rise of fear within the media during the age of 'Global Terrorism'.

Or,

Reporting on Middle Eastern conflicts between 1989 - 2006.

If no one likes this, let it die like the rest of my threads

I am doing an MA in French literature, though I have yet to decide what I will do my thesis on. Most likely either something Medieval or Romantic. but I still have a bit of time to decide as I'm doing my degree part-time. I did my undergraduate Honours degree at the University of Nottingham in French and graduated in 2006.

So likely nothing I do will be of interest to anyone, outside of medievalists, linguists, and nerds.

My knowledge of french lit is shameful i imagine to you, just the famous translated texts and of course Sade. After reading 'The Bloody Chamber' for my A level in Lit (a hateful book) I did pick up an interest in french lit. I find it to be far less patronising than english language lit of any era, more so modern writing. The only fiction books i can read now without feeling like i want to hurt the author are the Hitchhikers Guide series and backwards. I really don't understand why adjectives became such a big thing in literature. If you read a book like Brighton Rock or Great Expectations (guilty pleasure) You get a real feel for what the author intended and there is little description going on...anything that gets published now has about 15 fucking descriptions per line. I had to read a piece of lit called 'the infidel' as part of my Terrorism in culture module. It was the most (hopefully) unintentionally racist things i have ever read....and half of the room was in a trance of appreciation. eurgh.

Do you know your lecturers/personal tutor are yet?

If you end up with Peter Jackson (he does a lot of strat research)...unlucky. Colin McCines, if hes back from sabatical is a superb teacher.

Gerry Hughes is also great as is the one that loves israel (name escapes me)

I don't think anyone would be interested in dentistry, the only interesting thing I learned is that in a recent British research dentists were found to be the 2nd biggest fear for most people after heights, and before hospitals, snakes and spiders.


Great thread though and I could help in the Middle Eastern conflicts issue if you needed anything

I know exactly what you mean about adjectives. Some authors are really bad for it; my theory has always been that it is easier to write descriptions than it is to write truly great dialogue, so some people get caught up in it and then think they're great for having such a huge vocabulary.

My breadth of knowledge of English literature is actually quite poor, comparatively. Somehow I managed to escape actually having to read Dickens throughout my school career, so I cannot comment

I think dickens is one of the truly great authors (up there with douglas adams) for having fearless political commentary within his work. Oliver Twist was a damning analysis of the socio-economic and discriminatory society that had been created. Most people bitch out about Great Expectations because it was a newspaper serial and he was being paid by the page...i enjoyed it before i knew that i still do.

I think people who go to Uni, just to avoid working and pissing up student loans on stuff that's not relevant to Uni then have around 10 years to pay it back instead of taking a sizeable chunk of their wages from the day they get into work that I as a taxpayer pay for is a joke. Also the arrogance that flows through certain Uni students when half of them are wrapped in such a bubble and are ignorant of the real world(This is more of a rant of people I know, not casting everyone in the same boat)

Fuck Uni for the majority of clowns I know.

You're looking at it from the wrong angle I think. I think many people want to get educated, but most importantly they need to get higher degree to get a better job eventually as it's not possible to get in without it, unless you have some strong connections. As for the loan, it's not cheap but it's not 'working 10 years to get your money back either', it's more like 1 year in the most countries I think.

Not to mention the huge unemployment rate. There are far too many people with lower degrees waiting to get a job at this point. You might work Nick, but not everyone can get a proper job without school. And no, I don't think those who finish uni are guaranteed to have a better life than those who have high school, I don't disrespect them at all.
