It’s not ‘poor Italians went there and were subjected to racism’
There was also the huge increase in criminality, I don’t have to tell anyone here about the maffia we all know it.
So if a group of migrants from whatever country go somewhere, and they are massively overrepresented in crime rates, honestly I get why the native population gets angry. I mean why wouldn’t you?

Btw to answer my own post, I often thought about this in the past.
So how come group x is overrepresented in crime while group y isn’t while they have more or less equal opportunities
The only thing I come up with is that there’s a problem at a cultural/social levels within those groups. So Italians in the past in the US, or still now in the south, were likelier to go on the criminal path because they live in groups where crime gets romanticised and where their surroundings are willing to turn a blind eye or to trivialise their behaviour. This are more or less the patterns I recognised from own experience
I have a cousin who had to do quite some time, lived in that world since he was young, but according to his mother it was still the polices fault.
And this is also why I think that nationalism to a certain point is good (it shouldn’t become fascism). But the idea that you might trash your own country/community by a certain behaviour, might already be enough to stop people from doing is. We’re living in a world now though where nationalism is seen as something bad, because it might provoke racism. Maybe not relevant for the discussion but it came to my mind while writing this point
