Here's what Didier has to say.
“This is only a friendly by name”
“This is only a friendly by name. A game against Milan is never a training exercise although what really counts is that we’re in top form for the trip to Mantova on the 13th”. In his first press conference of the new year, Didier Deschamps looked ahead to tomorrow’s mouth-watering clash as the San Siro. The 'Trofeo Berlusconi’ will give an important indication of the team’s condition as they enter the second phase of the championship. “It will be an assessment of our current situation. I’m not going to risk anyone; it’s not easy to play a full ninety minutes after a week off, and the same goes for Milan. I’ll be making use of all six substitutes but even then, there are still four or five players who will have to last the whole game”.
The coach didn’t hide his enthusiasm for the team’s first game of 2007. “Playing Milan at the San Siro is always a prestigious occasion; there won’t be any need to motivate the players. We’re up against a quality side, at one of football’s most magnificent stadiums. But more importantly, this is a good opportunity for us to prepare for the second phase of the season. I always send my players out to win but with the time we’ve had off, I know we won’t be at peak form. This is more about evaluating the physical condition of individual players, our real preparations for the Mantova game start next week”.
The reunion with Serie A opposition has put the Bianconeri’s ambitions for next season in the spotlight once more. “We need to keep this game in context. We’re in Serie B right now and that’s all that counts. There’s been a lot of talk about our return to Serie A but nothing is for certain. So far we’ve played well and we’ve managed to make up the nine point deficit but it’s what happens from now on in that will prove decisive. Our primary objective is to seal our return to the top flight but in my eyes, and those of the players, there’s still a long way to go. We can’t take any risks”. Talk then turned to the January transfer window. “The window might be open but it’s important we maintain balance in the dressing room. We’ve chosen a group here with specific objectives in mind and everyone is playing their part. We’re going to keep things as they are until those goals are achieved. We’ll reassess the situation at the end of the season”. Deschamps reiterated the importance of the team’s leading players to the Bianconeri’s project for the future. “To be competitive next season we need to keep our champions at all costs. They are our insurance policy. With these players as foundations we can build something special, so we’re certainly not going to let anyone go. The club knows what I think and what I want; the basis of our future project lies in keeping these players”. Although the club has its eye firmly fixed on the transfer market, Deschamps maintains a sober outlook for the future. “We need time and even if we were to bring in six or seven new faces, there are no guarantees. We have to compensate with a strong mental attitude and have conviction in our own ability to compete with the best. Beyond Serie A, our objective is to return to the international stage as soon as possible. With it’s history and everything this club represents, world football needs Juventus”.
I really like what DD has to say at the end, let's hope our board doesn't let him or us down.
