Thomas Vermaelen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈtoː.mɑs vər.ˈmaː.lə(n)]; born 14 November 1985) is a Belgian footballer who captains Arsenal and is vice-captain of the Belgium national football team.
Vermaelen joined the Ajax youth academy in 2000 and won the 2003-04 Eredivisie title in his first season with the club. He had a loan spell with RKC Waalwijk before rejoining Ajax and winning the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruijff Shield. After Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's departure in 2009, he served as club captain for the remainder of the season. He joined Arsenal in 2009 and was included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for that season. Following Robin van Persie's transfer to Manchester United on August 2012, he was named club captain.
Being left-footed, he usually plays as a left-sided centre back and can play at left-back as well.[2] His key attributes include aerial ability, leadership skills and his quickness with the ball at his feet. He is also known for his goalscoring ability as a defender.

Early career
Vermaelen, though quite small for a central defender, started his career in his home country with Germinal Ekeren, which later changed its name to Germinal Beerschot after a merger. He then went to Ajax and Arsenal.



International career

A former youth international, Vermaelen had participated in the U-19 Championships and the 2007 U-21 European Championships. He made his senior debut for Belgium at age 20 against Luxembourg in March 2006. On 8 October 2009, he was named Belgium captain[25] prior to the games against Turkey and Estonia in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers but could not prevent the Belgians from finishing fourth in their group. He was recalled to squad for 14 November friendly against Hungary and scored his first goal for his country by tapping in an Eden Hazard cross. Vermaelen is regarded as one of the best Belgian defenders of his generation. Vermaelen wears the number 3 jersey and he has also won 34 caps for them and regularly partners Vincent Kompany who has 47 caps to his name.[26]

As vice Bonucci yes, since his passing/ball handling and forward runs is what makes him stand out, since he kinda been found out as a defender to say the least (onfocused and trouble with positioning). If the price is medium decent, why not.

I know nothing about this player. Is he any good?

Would he come as a bench player? Any word on what the transfer price is rumoured to be?

    he is captain for Arsenal and he plays for the Belgium natonal team so he should be a good backup player... or maybe we could play him at the back if we play the 4/2/3/1 formation that are rumored to use in the next champions league. don't you think?>

    I have to admit the thought of signing Arsenal's captain and benching him for the whole season would be worth it to me.

    He might be cheap but he's on a way too big contract for us to even consider him. He will become a first sub in defense but still, who's paying that salary for a backup?

    Vermaelen is allright in the physical sense of defending, but he wouldnt fit in italy. actually he's the classic example of why certain defensive minder players doesnt fit here.

    you need to have fantastic positional sense, anticipation, and knowledge of tactics.

    And those, are exactly what vermaelen sucsk at. But in the epl, its not a problem mostly

    yeah, thats exactly my point. For the role he could play here, the second sub, after caceres, he's FAR to expensive

    Both vermaelen and ogbonna are far to expensive.

    We should stick to what we got and get a cheap , preferably free, old, 5th cb.

    Next year, we can look for barzagli and pirlo(creative) future replacements.
