What would you have instead? You can't just take away people's belief system without substituting something else.. religion exists because people need it.
Well its too late now unfortunately. I just wish whoever created the religions in the first place had the foresight to realise what would happen. Not their fault i guess just human nature and stupidity.

Huh? If the people who created them hadn't created them, someone else would have. Don't you see that religion is absolutely vital to a lot of people?

Of course I see that its vital to a whole lot of people, I've yet to understand why though, nobody has ever convinced me that it is necessary... and considering muchof it is contrary to scientific evidence/fact.. I'd rather not start now.

TBH, while thatwas true in the past, fact is that the trend is reversing itself. A lot less people believe in God than in the past, which goes hand in hand with the developement of technology, medicine and society itself, which IMO proves that the more people belive in themselves and and stop feeling helpless the less they'll believe in God. Also, AFAIK, studies have shown that almost 75% of atheists are educated people, which just goes to show that society today is in a position to help itself, and requires less and less help from God.

I too believe that people in the past (100, 500, 1.000 years ago) needed to believe in God as they were in much less of a position to "stand up" to the world around them and were a lot more helpless then they are today, and I believe that, with further progress in technology and society humans will lose their need for God.

Do you have something to back this up? Is it taking place all over the world or just certain regions? We'd have to specify it a lot closer before drawing any kind of conclusion..

No, I'm talking in general. And I read about the study a few years ago in anewspaper, so I cant really give you a link or anything, but that goes hand in hand with your theory about man needing God.

Religion is really more of the organic outgrowth of human experience where people have always questioned their place and purpose in the universe and needed a way to comprehend it. Call it a personal metaphysics if you will, then throw in a context of culture, time, and place, and you pretty much have the recipe for religion. Not unlike, I see, as the reason why we have political parties when, in general, I would prefer to do away with all of them and their issue-by-issue menu of biases.

So is religion necessary? You can say it's a collective societal invention to address a personal need. So the answer to many is most definitely yes.

And religion doesn't necessarily come at the exclusion of science either. Depends on the belief system. On one hand, you've got 500 years of Galileo's excommunication. On the other, there are those who religiously believe that science is the code of interpreting the world that was created by some higher being.

Religion exists because people have faith and know that all the perfect things around us could not have just appeared out of nowhere. People who do not have faith will never understand faith, therefore of course religion will not matter to them. Feel free to disagree, however please, show some respect and try to realize that insulting religions means insulting 75% of the world's population.
