On tuesday i am going to The Gambia for a week holiday with my lady before we go back to uni. It was a last minute booking and we had a choice between Spain and there. I was wondering if by chance anyone has been there or Senegal, Mali or Guinea/Guinea Bissau. If they have can they share some advice on the area or things to do, or people have general advice for a pasty middle class 20 yr old who hasnt been in a developing nation before. Thank you in advance.

Mali is fairly easy to get around without being shot. A fairly relaxed border from what I've read. Lemme link you an article.

Basically, ask around when you get to where you are going. People will tell you if the border has been fishy, where there is trouble and where there isn't.

I went on a mission trip to Conakry, Guinea in 2005. It was only for about 3 weeks and I spent a good chunk of that time in the remote villages a few hours away from the main city.

The people in Guinea are generally very friendly, though I think a good deal of that was due to their fascination at seeing a bunch of Asians walking around town (there are very few foreigners in Guinea). If you have a working knowledge of French, you'll get along great with the locals.

They love football in Guinea. I resorted to wearing my Juventus jersey around pretty much all the time, because it instantly identified me as a football fan and opened up avenues for instant connection and conversations with people.

Because Conakry is on the west coast, it gets extremely humid during summer, though that shouldn't be too much of a problem at this time of year.
