A Diagonal Pass (sounds like a through ball to me) forces play up, it promotes attack, so no I wouldn't say lateral and diagonal are the same thing

However, with respect to the game, a "lateral pass" is a square pass perpendicular to the touch-line.

i was referring to our friend's attack, and i like melo and have been watching him for a while i dont need faux melo or anyone else to tell me what to think of him to me hes not a good passer of the ball and last year showed that pretty clearly.

Looking at my Webster, nothing in the definition of "lateral" states that it must be perpendicular to another plane.

But I didn't know "lateral pass" was defined in soccer. Perhaps you're confusing that with American football.
