Wikipedia:

Webster ruling is a term used to associate the purchase of any striker on the planet by Juventus that immediately institutes the sale of Amauri to any team in the world interested at any price.

A Fifa loophole could pave the way for Rooney to leave United for £5m. Under the Webster ruling, Rooney can buy out the final year of his contract for his current annual salary.

Wayne Rooney wants to leave Man Utd - Sir Alex Ferguson
Won't happen.

Big clubs have agreed not to make use of the ruling, because it would wreck the current transfer system.

It'll just be used as a negotiating tactic to make sure Man Utd can't demand a ridiculous amount of money.

What is the Webster ruling?

:shifty:
Players in the last year of a long contract can effectively hand in their notice and resign by paying the club the remaining value of the contract (i.e. their annual salary).

The Bosman Ruling involves the player respceting the full length of the contract, but leaving at the end for nothing.

Webster allows the player to leave before the end of the contract, in certain circumstances.

Didn't Inter and Lucio pull that one last year?
No.

What was that transfer then?

They say an undisclosed fee but I remember hearing that Inter basically paid Bayern the 4m that it would cost for him to buy out his contract because if they declined or wanted more he would just buy it out himself.

Very shady but basically the same thing don't you think?

That's how the Webster thing is used; it's a negotiating tactic.

Lucio just has to threaten to use it, even though he almost certainly won't, and Bayern are forced to sell him relatively cheaply.

The Webster rule can only be applied to moving to a foreign club, right?
