Not my state, but I wouldn't expect you to understand that the Government has no hand in that and that the power to make that call is delegated to the individual states.

So no, "mine" never has.
It did until 1950, but that's neither here nor there.

I did saw some sort of law called "stop lose" or something like that
Stop Loss? It's a law that allows the government to re-enlist soldiers after their time is up. The thing about it is that a stop loss isn't always final and that you can fight it and speak out against it without ending up in jail. And if Steven Spielberg made a movie showing the controversies of American society it certainly wouldn't be censored or banned from the US. The same thing goes for books and movies.

I had the chance to talk to my uncle the other day about China and it was interesting to hear the opinion of someone who's actually lived there.

According to him, all this talk about the Chinese being oppressed is a very relative term to use. Considering the situation of the Chinese pre-1949, they've come a long way. They have brought such a large number of people out of the poverty line and if iirc they have the fastest growing middle class. Chine being the fastest growing economy is certainly no surprise to anyone here. So if you look at this way the Chinese are doing very well.

The West always wants to impose its beliefs and ideals on people and if people don't do it the way they do it, they're labeled as uncivilized and oppressed. The Chinese might not enjoy the same human rights as the West but considering where they were a few decades ago, they've made immense progress.

There is a lot of bullshit in this country, that's for sure. Half of the citizens are indeed retarded.
so what? don't be like the non-americans around here and make it sound like the only retarded people in the world are americans.

thats bullshit, every country has dumb fuck people, who support fascists, racists, and immoral theocracies but you don't see me labeling any of them as retarded or facesciously asking them if they are proud of it.

what the fuck are you talking about?

You can say that for a lot of things. The world as a whole is far better off today than it was 50 or even 100 years ago. That's an undeniable fact. Does that mean that the world today can't get any better and that people should shut up because even though they have it "bad" people before them had it worse? Probably not. Striving for the better no matter what culture is what makes a society humane. Trust me I hear Chinese people when they say that today is better than the feudal years of pre-1949, but that's should be the end all for their evolution as far as rights, privileges, and the pursuit of happiness go.

But people are right when they say Americans in general are oblivious to the rest of the world. It's not any of us here on Juventuz, but we all have friends who don't really care about the rest of the world and vote for ridiculous things over important matters. I'd bet you 35% of this country votes for the 2nd Amendment alone more than anything else. That's what I call "retarded."

but how can you sit there and say that the rest of the world isn't oblivious as well? you talk as if the rest of the world sits down for fireside chats every week where the topic of discussion is current events minus the attendance of the U.S.

i guarantee you that the rest of the world suffers from the same "retarded" characteristic that you and many other on this forum label americans with.

i know that you have pride for your country but just don't be naive to the fact that the world is not that different no matter where you go. people are dumb in general and thats the bottom line. and we all know that stupidity transcends all boundaries.

People are naive in general, but I think our society breeds this materialistic thinking that all that matters is what is going on within our own niche. I take a look at people around from Southern Pennsylvania, reading up on how they view various aspects of life, and I've found it quite appalling. These white rural folk just vote for 2nd Amendment rights, Dru, and that's all. They vote Republican just because of this one useless facet of life. If that's not retarded, then I don't know what is.

There are so many problems with this country you could not even precisely note all of them. From the way we discriminate against races and sexual orientation over our history, to the way the people in charge have a stranglehold over the masses with the fear factor, to the way people vote for a party just because their daddy did and loved to go hunting. Sure, it's not as bad as China, but too many people in the US are misinformed about the world and our society deems that as acceptable business.

So therefore, it's the not the fault of the individual per se. It's more the fault of the society, the people that control it, and the media who describes themselves as fair and balanced while brainwashing the dumbasses.

but then again ppl only care about whats around them and whats affecting them. everyone naturally cares about their own "microcosm" per se. thats human nature.

you also have to remember that i live in texas where they vote for the same thing as they do in southern pennsylvania. so i know what you are basing this on. the only difference is that all people from the south are dumb. not a fractional percentage

But those here only care about their own niche considering we are rather isolated. People in Europe and other nations are more of a conglomeration, so they naturally are more concerned with the way other nations handle their wordly affairs. That's also partly why, despite them being surrounded by different countries, they started to evolve into having a central European bank and monetary system with the Euro.

That's my point. As long as we have been a country, the only concerns we have had (to the normal man) have been our home town details. Rights such as the 2nd Amendment. We live in a place where no matter what we do abroad, we will only be marginally affected, because we are essentially an island here. Europeans and others have to worry about other consequences considering their borders are sometime 50 km away. So what I'm saying is the contrast to this situation breeds a nonchalant attitude towards other places within the world, because hey, we're all set here in America, right?

Our society condones such behavior through the media and through the way our society castigates immigrants and everything foreign to us. Our society proclaims we are the end all and be all of civilization. Our society [and media] proclaims we are the best country in the world. Don't you see Dru? All this nonsense just breeds a state of lethargic individuals who don't care about anything besides their fake American dream. And their weapons, which boggles my mind to this day. And this is truly my opinion regarding this matter because I don't really understand some people in my own country.

totally agree Andy but you have idiots everywhere no matter where you live
over here we don't have a right to vote we are ordered to vote by law, now offcourse you can say that would solve some problems in the US cuz that would mobilise a lot of people who don't normally vote but the downside is that a large group of people over here really shouldn't vote
they don't care about politics and vote for a racstl party who is banned by other politicians and thus will never be ellected
the idea of the rest of Europe is that Belgium is racist but this is merely the result of this law
some people are just too stupid to vote and so they vote for someone who will never be in office just to piss everbody else off
you see there are retards everywhere

i dont think any self respected american will agree that the current democratic system in the US works well, at the moment
Well hey, it's what we've got.
It's not just the people in it, it truly is the system. It's one of the poorest democratic systems around IMO. It's difficult to have a transparent democratic system (the one in Belgium isn't too great either), but the one you guys have is ridiculous. TBH I expect the next elections to be fixed. Something will keep Obama from victory and it won't be the voters.

Let's face it... and I know I speak for Burke in this regard ... China will always be a wannabe follower to Japan in terms of Far East Asia's cultural relevance to the world until they can give us terms like "bukkake".

i can't believe i actually agree with al gore on something, but he pointed out that the system will never work if people still need to spend millions on campaigns
