It helps as a leverage for future negotiations ("we will leave for sure next time). But yeah it makes no sense to think this was a negotiation tactic this time. It went full on war declaration with serious consequences and bottomlines potentially effected. Seem to underestimated how severely unpopular idea it is.
They messed up the PR big time. Football has always been a game where the underdogs were rooted for. Even if a Leicester, a Porto or a Greece happens once in a few decades just the fact that it can happen is the appeal of the game. If you take that away, people will rightly be pissed. If they have come around saying that the founding clubs won't be relegated for a couple of years but then they can be replaced/relegated a lot more people would have bought into it. Even if the chances of that happening was going to be minuscule, fans would have still been in favor. They bottled the messaging hard.

Is there some leverage/ pressure here that UEFA has on the clubs backing out that is being underreported? Such a sudden turn around is shocking.

I get that there has been a lot of criticism but they had to expect that, initially, there would be a wave of criticism from fans, pundits, other teams, FAs, etc. They had to have seen that coming.

How could this be such a mess? What the fuck?!

Sad say. The CL will dilute further . You can bank on it ,after that laughable 36 team proposal
The PL tv deal is probably gonna reach 6 to 7 billion after covid.
Real and Barca to be saved by the government, again.
All will be fair all over the place .
Seria A to die a slowly painful death in Europe.

These 12 pricks gambled, but the supporters that really matter and pay the bills rebelled, and the 12 monkeys caved in. LOL. This is the truth. Despite all the talks of global reach, the European supporters pay the most and these idiots thought we are going to pay for this too. LOL. Fuck off.

Man, this will have repercussions.

I can’t expect the clubs not throwing in the towel to get away with it.

Have there been protests in Italy, at all? All ive seen are ones outside EPL clubs. Nothing in Spain either.

English protests is all its needed. Didnt have German teams and English teams massive popularity and them being 50% of SL means if they leave its dead on sight.

They are rich as fuck whether they join or not, so they only lose out in image and reputation by joining with this backlash. While Spanish and italian teams are in desperate need of the JP Morgan cash injection, so they would prolly went ahead with it despite protests.
