Box Office: Return Is Still King
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) — During the biggest Christmas weekend in history, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King retained its crown at the North American box office with an estimated haul of $51.2 million.
The last film in New Line's epic trilogy, based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and directed by Peter Jackson , has accrued an impressive $223.7 million in 12 days.
Despite its three-and-a-half-hour running time, King crossed the $200 million mark Saturday after 11 days — the second fastest to that level behind Sony's Spider-Man, which reached that plateau in nine days. Its three-day tally represents a drop of only 29 percent from its opening stanza.

Return of the King Sets Wednesday Record
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) — The final installment in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy set a new box-office record for a Wednesday launch and posted the third-highest opening-day gross of all time, its distributor said on Thursday.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King sold about $34.1 million worth of tickets in movie theaters across North America on Wednesday, a figure that includes $8 million from midnight Tuesday screenings.
The previous record for a Wednesday opening was held by Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, which bowed with $28.5 million in 1999. The all-time one-day opening record of $39.4 million is held by last year's Spider-Man, followed by The Matrix Reloaded earlier this year with $37.5 million.
Among its Lord of the Rings predecessors, The Fellowship of the Ring grossed $18.2 million during its first day in December 2001, while The Two Towers kicked off with $26.1 million last year, a figure that now ranks No. 3 among Wednesday openings.
The new film should surpass the $102 million that The Two Towers racked up during its first five days, said Rolf Mittweg, president of worldwide marketing and distribution at New Line Cinema, which released the trilogy.
Given the film's near unanimous praise from critics and moviegoers alike, "I don't think anything can go wrong, actually," he said in an interview.
Additionally, the movie grossed $23.5 million from 19 countries, setting opening-day records in at least 12 of them, Mittweg said. Day-one totals included $5.2 million from Britain, $5 million from Germany, and $3 million from France.
The three Lord of the Rings movies, based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, were directed by Peter Jackson in his native New Zealand. Together, the first two films have grossed about $655 million in North America alone.
Earlier Thursday, the film picked up four Golden Globe nominations, for best picture, director, score, and song.

I understand why some of you were disappointed about TROTK..
but, what I was trying to say is that it is still a great movie.. it didn't fulfill J.J.R Tolkien's thoughts and ideas, but IMHOI think it is a great movie.. the records above proves I'm right..
