Boumsong Linked As Lyon Look For More Defensive Cover

OL have landed veteran 'keeper Frederic Roux to offer goalkeeping reinforcements in the wake of Gregory Coupet's injury, but that still leaves a gap in defence. Cris picked up a long-term injury, meaning a hole in central defence - could Jean-Alain Boumsong be the one to fill it?

Former Auxerre stopper Jean-Alain Boumsong has been linked with a return to France, with Olympique Lyonnais apparently showing an interest in the Juventus man.

The French champions are in the midst of an injury crisis and drastically need reinforcements; Cris recently suffered an injury that could see him out until well after the New Year, following a collision with Johan Elmander in his side's 1-0 defeat to TEF.

Boumsong, who won Serie B with Juventus last season, could yet be drafted in as cover, with L'Equipe speculating that the Stade Gerland side is weighing up a £2m bid for the international defender.

Cameroon-born Jean-Alain started his career at Le Havre before being snapped up by Auxerre. Following four successful years at AJA, Rangers swooped for the then-24 year old, landing him on a free transfer.

Mere months later he was off to Newcastle United in a mammoth £8m deal that has since become subject to inquiry from Lord Stevens, with reported "outstanding issues" involving players' agents.

Boumsong's time at St. James' Park was less than exemplary, and he was soon on the way to Juventus for a £3.25m fee, where he was a part of last season's Serie B title-winning side.

Now, though, with Juventus back in the top flight, the Old Lady has signed likes of Jorge Andrade to shore up the central defence, meaning little room for Jean-Alain in the first team.

Whether he decides to return to Lyon - or whether OL even bid - is still, however, open to question.

Les Gones currently sit mid-table after one win and two defeats in their first three games. Juventus kick off their season this Saturday with a home clash against Livorno.

Boumsong Forsees Juve Stay

He may have helped Juventus to the Serie B title last year, but many feel that Jean-Alain Boumsong's chances with the Old Lady this season are limited. However, the player has revealed that he's yet to receive an acceptable concrete offer to tempt him away from the Stadio delle Alpi, and thus he's set to remain...

Jean-Alain Boumsong seems fairly certain that he'll be a member of the Juventus squad following the closure of the transfer window.

The former Rangers and Newcastle United stopper has been linked with a move away from the Turin side, particularly in light of summer centre-back signings such as Jorge Andrade.

Increased squad competition for Juve's return to Serie A could see him kept out of the team but, for now, he's happy where he is.

The defender confirmed that he'd received "no concrete offer" from Lyon, who are looking for defensive cover after the injury to Cris, and that he was looking ahead to the Italian league campaign.

He said, "I have Juve on my mind, ready to start the new season. I'm ready to work and looking forward to enjoying time on the pitch. There is a 99% chance that I will be at Juve after August 31."

August 31st, of course, is when the summer transfer window closes, and squads are finalised ahead of the new campaign.

In a hilarious twist, Spanish and French sources last night linked the French defender with none other than Barcelona.

While clearly just "paper talk", the story was of particular note because the French sources claimed 'Iberian media' introduced it, while Spanish newspapers cited the 'French press.'

Needless to say, there is not thought to be any substance to that particular story!

My dream of keeping Boumsong seems to stay a dream. But serious...why the hell do we sell(or even worse loan) Boumsong? We need back-up CBs and he should be one of them. I don't know about Legrottaglie,he isn't even good enough as a back-up and should just move on at Genoa or a club at this level. My point is If we sell Boumsong we have to buy another back-up(don't you guys think so?),so we sell a backup and buy a backup right after?Where's the sense? Boumsong seems ready to'fight' for a place in the squad(with other words he is ready to sit on the bench),Ivanovic,Da Costa or Garay would want a starting place I suggest.

Andrade, Criscito, Legrotagglie and Boumsong are good four center backs, we don't need a new defender and we shouldn't sell any of them.

have to agree

Boumsong is a good defender and has always been. There are just a few defenders who are as good as Boum when it comes to headers. He would be great, if he didn't have his stupid mistakes from time to time.
