I love those misanthropes. I've often found that it's the people who are incapable of learning how to work with others as equals have the most affinity to animals more than people. If you cannot dominate them or have them do your bidding or give them an aura of helplessness -- or if they challenge you -- you can't deal.
Kid gets shot in the street, it's like "Ooops". Dog gets run over by a car, and suddenly the hundred-dollar checks start flowing and committed cause Web sites go up.
Society doesn't need people who are socially bankrupt, IMO. These people need to grow up and learn to appreciate equals they cannot dominate. That "benevolent dictator" thing works fine on pets, but it pisses off your neighbor and sets expectations of your brother that are inhumane.
