Bruins Ink Johnny Boychuk Jul 1, 2009, 7:48 PM EDT

BoychuckBOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed defenseman Johnny Boychuk to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

The 25-year-old Boychuk was the winner of the Eddie Shore Award as the American Hockey League’s outstanding defenseman for the 2008-09 season after recording 20 goals and 45 assists in 78 regular season games. His 20 goals and 45 assists were tops amongst all AHL defensemen and set a Providence Bruins team record for points by a blueliner. He finished second in the P-Bruins scoring race on the season, one point behind Martin St. Pierre.

Boychuk was also voted into the starting lineup for the Canadian team at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic, was a co-winner of the CCM/AHL Player of the Month award for March, and was named a First Team AHL All-Star.

Waaaaayy too much. He's had chronic groin issues, and is considered to be injury prone. He is a fantastic talent, but he's just always hurt. He's worth over 6M if he's healthy, I can see a team stretch it to 7+... he could put up some outstanding numbers if he plays with some solid linemates. but 5 years is a really long term at that amount...

Brian Gionta to Habs...DONE DEAL! 5 years, 25m.

    5 ft 7, 175lbs

    60pts last year...best season with Gomez...48g 41a 89pts
Gionta is at least a consistent scorer, always getting over 20 goals each season, but with more talent next to him he could get more.

In 2005-06, he did indeed score 48 goals, but exactly half of them were on the power play. :pumpkin:

To be honest, that season looks like a one-hit wonder, but then again that's the same season when Patrick Elias was out with a lengthy injury, so Gionta did step up nicely for the Devils. Perhaps he'll step up again in Montreal.

Shit, the Blackhawks sign John Madden on a 1-year, 2.75M deal. He's a good pickup for them as he can play-two ways and kill penalties with the best of them.

I wanted to add him to our third line. :(

Not to mention that Glen Sather pulls off this miraculous trade to give them some flexibility, and 24hrs later decides to blow it all on a player who is basically never healthy...
This smilie should be named in Sather's honor:

    :howler:

You know what's funny? We have a much better team than last year if we get another good D.(Bob said he'll add one more in tonights press conference).

    We replaced:

    Koivu with Gomez
    Tanguay with Cammalleri
    Kovalev with Gionta
    Komisarek with Mr. X
    Bouillon with Gill
    Schneider with Spacek
Higgins with Pacioretty(1st round pick in 2007)

Let's not forget that the team chemistry will be better than last year's. Can't get worse + we now have a coach with a system.

Let's just hope that new defenseman is solid.(Beauchemin, Scuderi...)

Let's face it. Sedins wanted to stay in Vancouver. Gaborik got 7.5m and he's injury prone, same with Havlat. Komi told us to f*ck off and jumped on the TO ship. Hossa got a 12 years contract...
