Remember when Cannavaro was playing at INTER, well he wasn't excelling there. Cannavaro reached his peak while playing for Juve. Would also like to remind you that soccer is played 11 vs 11 and a player can't cover every player. I recognize that Barzagli isn't a defensive leader like Cannavaro was, so therefore he doesn't have the same impact that Cannavaro had on his team-mates or organized the defenders like he did. But he is indeed a good defender, not a world-class but if given the opportunity he will either become a world class player or flop.
Cannavaro was world class even at Parma, that was obvious to the whole world. But like I said Parma were at the time a promising club so he sticked with them for longer than he should have, when he went to Inter he flopped because it was obviously the wrong enviroment for him, at Juve he simply rediscovered his form.

Barzagli lost the label of a promising defender a number of years ago, now he's an average defender which people hope to be the new Canna or Nesta because Italy haven't got much other choices. That hope is futile because obviously he hasn't got it in him. I'm glad you recognised he isn't a leader and can't organize the defense which is exactly why Canna/Nesta were so damn good, that's probably one of the most important parts of being a world class center back.

Anyway I think you and pretty much all Italy supporters aren't objective when it comes to this guy, for reasons I already pointed out, so I'll leave this where it is. Time will tell I guess.

Cannavaro is the best at anticipating. He's such a beast in anticipating passes. In Madrid this isn't as effective, because defences in La Liga frankly do not work as well as units, compared to Serie A defences. So no cover and no teamwork, if he intercepts a pass, he leaves space open. You can't play two anticipating cb's next to eachother, you need someone to cover the gaps.

Just look at this. amazing.

This only works though, when you have a cb covering, more of a say 'standing' cb. At juve, Cannavaro had Thuram and Kovac and for Italy, he had Nesta. Nesta takes the lead of the defensive line, guide his teammates, has dialogues with the goalkeeper (to find the most appropriate adjustements of the "axis") and cover those defenders who try to push foward. What makes Nesta greater than other, is he how he pushes the defensive line forward and keeps the gaps so close.

Both Cannavaro and Nesta are great, but different.

I think what makes Chiellini and Legro work so well, is that they too are different and complement each other well. Chiellini also pushes more forward and anticipates, while Legro covers from the back. Andrade and Criscito did not complement eachother well.

Sorry for taking this a bit far :D.

Well if I had to classify Barzagli. I'd say he's a poor man's Nesta, which isn't bad at all.

I think most of you like to give Barzagli a lot of stick, just because many rate him as the next best thing. He may not be the latter, but he is more than a decent defender.

yep...he hasn't really come into the spotlight because he is still playing at a relatively smaller club...if and when he makes a move to one of the big 4 then i think a lot of ppl will think differently about him

I hope he can still become that player, & at Juve, working with Ciro is the best place to make that possible. I still think we should try, because if he can he would make us so much better. If Andrade gets fit & Legro continues his good form, those 3 plus Chiellini, Criscito & Grygera gives us excellant options. If it didn't work, so be it.

(edit: God theres a lot of "ifs" in there, maybe someone else would be a better signing after all?:D )
