Torkel, Les Paul is a great guitar, actually one of my fav
Front pick has a great bassy sound that no other guitar reproduces. No blues solo sounds as good as it does on Les Paul (that is if you like Gary Moore kind of blues). Did you buy it yet?
If yes: How's your back? It's a grea tguitar, but it's bloody heavy
Telekaster is also bluesy guitar. Not really for tehnical stuff. Also good choice.
Same with Strat. Just that it has slightly better tehnical possibilities. It is a guitar in the middle, so to say. You can play almost any kind of music on it. Thats why is so popular i guess. The sound it produces (like telecaster) is slightly sharper.

Also the Ibanez Joe Satriani signature (the red one) looks sweet. I don't play in a band, so I've been thinking that maybe I should consider a "super soloist" type of guitar.

Zambrotta, i totaly disagree with you on telecaster
I cant imagine Mettallica going out on a stage with telecasters plugged in messa-Bugie
For that kind of sound, you go after ESP or some Ibanez, Washburn, Charvel and stuff like that. (seven stringers come to mind for really heavy stuff)
For clean or semi dirty sound (Rolling stones, Dire Straits, RHCP and so on) you go for an "old" style guitar like Telecaster, Strat and so on. Also good for good old rock, pure valve distorsion.
If you go for Gary Moore, Guns&Roses and stuff, with deep, bluesy solo sound, you go for Les Paul or PRS if you have money.
You can also have models that are quite specific. Strat has what i call Murray model, with top lock & floyde rose. Thats my fav one.
Als what you have to consider is tickness of strings that suits you. For tehnical, fast solos i suggest Ibanez with 9s. For Rock/Blues, i suggest PRS/Strat/ Les Paul with 10s.

No you are right the telecaster is not made for Metallica riffs, but it is not the kind of guitar you should have if you play by yourself.
I play guitar. Acoustic and Electric. I can play base alittle but who cant
Im a kinda messed up guitar player though. I learnt acoustic by starting with the basic chords using sheet notes and took it from there, i played alot when i was like 15/16. Gradually I was able to start playing from listening to music. After a few attempts I can play must medium acoustic. I play electric guitar also and can play some Nirvana, Chris Rea, RHCP and Guns licks. Though Ive never actually learnt a song from start to finish (cant be bothered)
I could already play Piano before I started to learn guitar. I think that definately helped with learning to play from listening. Im much better on Piano/Keyboard than I am guitar. I also play drums though alittle sucky

Oh and my guitar is a black Fender Stratocaster, thought its alittle beat up, i through it down alot 
Acoustic ive had a Fender, Yamaha and Takamine but i destroyed them either by accident or in purpose, now im using a Epiphone EL-00 which has been my fav acoustic so far, though the Takamine was also pretty cool

I've been playing a bit lately, very fun. Trying to learn the Radiohead song "Electioneering", and some stuff from one of my instructional books.
