Oh yeah, that's what it was. Lack of Competition.

Smart ass.

Another great songrwiter who is greatly unappreciated.

Smokey Robinson. He wrote many, many hits for Motown in their early days
Just messing with you, I don't have a beef with any of these groups. Don't listen to any of it and it's completely historical as far as I'm concerned but then not everyone shares my fondness for 90s Eurodance  either

Coincidently the same reason Tifoso Lou cannot be more than 200 feet from a school.
:lol2:

No, it didn't "fly over my head", Greg, but thanks for insulting my intelligence. :D
My pleasure, Sergio. :D

Again, like I said, there is a REASON why their music is so popular 40 years after the fact.

Its because the quality of said music is superb. How else can you justify it??
I've always hated popularity as a proxy for quality. Anyone who believes that has to think that digg is the best news Web site on the planet... that's my issue.

I'm saying that it is popular BECAUSE it is quality. Not the other way around.

the chicken or the egg?

The point is you're saying popularity is proof of quality.

No. I'm not.

Britney Spears is Popular. Miley Cyrus is popular.

Their music, if you can call it that, is utter shit, and it will be forgotten in 5-10 years, max.

This group hasn't realeased a song in 40 years, yet a re-mastered box set and video game is coming out tomorrow. And they are sold out everywhere.
Its because the music is still timeless and superb after all of these decades. This is why it is still popular.

How am I NOT making myself perfectly clear on this??

I think the popularity test improves with the test of time. But it's still fundamentally flawed. Because then this entire thread would be merely about historical album sale counts then and there would be nothing for us to discuss.

There are too many factors that go into what makes something popular, regardless of its time. Quality is merely one of them.

And George Harrison was the best Beatle of them all.

"All things must pass" is far and away the best solo album of all the Beatles.
Harrison was the best..as in your personal favourite,or the most talented of that lot?

Since im assuming that you'd go with a Beatle as the greatest songwriter ever, who do you think was a better songwriter..Lennon Or McCartney?

Now this post would be pointless if you think Harisson was the best songwriter of them all.

Speaking of Harrison,i just found this on youtube.I cant believe never saw it before :

George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Elton John and Jeff Lyne playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

    Talk about being epic.

And is it just me or does Harrison's son look his own, younger clone? It's freaky.

It's probably just me, but I never got the appeal of the all-star-lineup band. George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Elton John and Jeff Lynne all may have great accomplishments individually or in their respective groups. But jumble them all together on stage at the same time, and people seem to cream over themselves for what typically amounts to too many egos in conflict on the stage at once playing mediocre music as a single unit.

I would take seeing the Beatles, Eric Clapton solo (or with Cream, etc.), Phil Collins solo (or Genesis), etc., each alone 100x over before seeing them perform together.

Usually when you jumble artists together like that, you're basically doing your best to tolerate an over-the-hill Super Bowl halftime show with Aerosmith, Britney Spears, and 'N Sync.

Isnt this a futile discussion, this is entirely subjective, it depends on what stimulates your mind and what affects your life. A song or artist can meaning nothign to someone and changed someone elses life. For exp i think the beatles, queen or oasis couldnt write a good song to save their lives, but other people have had the lives changed and minds opened by those 3 bands. If this were on technical ability you would find all the greatest songwriters in the blues, rock, metal, classical, jazz or funk...Stevie Ray Vaugh, Jimi H, James Hetfield, Johan Sebastian Bach, John Frusciante, Keith Richards etc.etc.

this is who the rollingstone says are the best

The most talented, in my opinion.

And the best songwriter. Out of my top 10 Beatles songs, six of them are written by George.

    #10) Taxman (GH)
    #9) Penny Lane
#8) While my guitar gently weeps (GH)
    #7) Day in the Life
#6) Here Comes the Sun (GH)
    #5) Something (GH)
    #4) I need you (GH)
    #3) Tomorrow Never Knows
    #2) Love you to (GH)
    #1) Long and Winding Road
