Great defenders have always been hard to come by; I for one would love to see an influx of talent to replace the curent ageing generation of greats, particularly Italian ones. While it may seem like defenders of their calibre are ahrd to come by nowadays, I believe we still have a good half a decade before we can conclude that this "era" is actually over.

for starts.i dont think roberto carlos is a great defender.you cant be a great defender when half of your time is spent in the other team's half.he's very over rated IMO.

but i have to agree, there does seem to be a shortage of great defenders these days.

During his prime he was an excellent player however, good defender or not.

well i see your point hambon but how did you manage to leave out gentile?most ironic name in football ever. there uis a lack of hardmen defenders mainly due to the way the game has changed now,i used to love seeing a well executed slide tackle, coming in from behind and taking the ball(and the man)when it was performed right it was a work of art. nowadays defenders cant go to ground with out somecrazy assed, power hungry, fame seeking refferee(who has never played the game)whipping out a red card for "dangerous play"
the day they outlawed the sliding tackle from behind they ruined the livelyhood of the "hard but fair" defender, more the shame for the game

:agree:

I couldn't agree with you more axl! Carlos has been living off a reputation thats seen him score goals for far too long. He's been caught off guard way too much for real, but i suppose his heart is not in that team anymore!
