VIERI READY TO FACE WALES
Christian Vieri took part in today’s game between ranks and will start alongside Pippo Inzaghi as Trap names his line-up.
“Vieri has taken away all my doubts on his condition,” assured Giovanni Trapattoni after a quick run-out with the squad.
Italy must win Saturday’s Euro 2004 qualifier with Wales at the San Siro in order to go top of the Group Nine standings.
As expected, the tactician will return to his favoured 4-4-2 system following the injury worries to Francesco Totti, Simone Perrotta and Fabrizio Miccoli.
There are no changes in defence, but Alessio Tacchinardi replaces Chievo man Perrotta in central midfield.
Cristiano Zanetti is still not 100 per cent fit, so Milan’s Gennaro Gattuso is on stand-by in case of developments.
Alessandro Del Piero is forced out wide on the left, a position he has confirmed he is not particularly happy with.
“I understand that the Coach has certain requirements right now,” said the Juventus captain.
“I feel that I am a forward and would prefer to be more central to our play, but right now we need to win and I will do whatever is required of me.”
Vieri has barely trained all week after picking up a knock in Inter’s 2-0 win over Modena.
He then felt a twinge in his left knee during yesterday’s training session, but seems fit to start on Saturday.
There were questions over his partner against Wales, but Pippo Inzaghi’s fine form seems to put him ahead of Roma contender Marco Delvecchio.
Mauro Camoranesi wins the battle to take the right flank, pushing Lazio playmaker Stefano Fiore on to the bench.
Italy line-up announced by Trapattoni: Buffon; Panucci, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Zanetti, Del Piero; Inzaghi, Vieri
