I refuse to accept that ATB is cheesy :D

Don, its essential because I said so

:) they have a psychological term for that - "denial"

ATB really is cheesy and it's your right to accept or not to accept it :p

what else do you listen to Tom ?

well basically I listen to anything in or around the trance area, nothing too hard, none of the cheesy pop crap that gets in the charts, just middle of the line, quality pure trance. Unfortunately there's not too much around right now but the new Tiesto album is tops!

My most recent trance CD has actually just got my faves from that plus some old classics like delerium - silence (tiesto mix) paul van dyk - for an angel atb - 9pm ( :D ) binary finary - 1998 (pvd remix) bt - flaming june ayla - ayla veracocha - carte blanche

these are like my favourite trancy tunes of all time anyway :)

Yeah, but what's cheesy Tom? :D We all have different standards. I never understood your beef with DJ Sammy's stuff, particularly 'Boys of Summer'. Fantastic dance tune, if I ever heard one. Is it the lyrics that cause you embarassment?

I dunno steph its hard to nail it down to one particular thing that makes a song "too cheesy" - in my view at least. You have to take each song on its merits I guess and decide for yourself. Thats what i do :)

Its not really the lyrics that bother me. i mean, yeah its a cover but covers can be fantastic if done proper;y so its not that. I'm a big fan of vocal trance anyhow so that wouldn't be an issue!

I dunno man, maybe its just cause you like it ;):D

Lasgo - Something
Trinity-X - Forever
Milk Inc - Loosing Love

You wouldnt see any of those tracks in an Armin, Tiesto, Ferry, Shulz or any other major DJs tracklist in one of his sets. Those are some good tunes, and many people listen to them. In fact I listen to a lot of those songs.

If you ever look at Tiesto set, or a Armin van Buuren set, the songs would all be new and unknown to you. Thats why I like these kind of DJs. THey introduce the world to new artists and new styles of trance. Instead, compilations such as MOS, just pick up the latest Scooter, IvD, Lasgo, and Trinity X songs and throw them on their compilations. Its great music to dance to, but If your looking for something different, something new and some FRESH throught about trance, listen to REAL dj sets.

For example, lets look at Tiesto's alum Magik 6 - Live in Amsterdam. This album/set is regarded as Tiestos best work and is also considered as one of the best trance DJ sets ever played. Now look at the track list:

    1. Fratty Boy - Afterburn
    2. Eyeball - Sunburst (John Johnson remix)
    3. Voyage - Yahel
    4. Surreal - Free Radical (En Motion remix)
    5. Forever Young - Fire & Ice
    6. Purple Cloud - The Swimmer
    7. Silence - Delerium (DJ Tiesto's In Search Of Sunrise remix)
    8. Viola - Moongwai (Armin Van Buuren remix)
    9. Wasteland - Kamaya Painters
    10. Sixty Nine Ways - Cloud 69
    11. Escape From Nowhere - Airwave
    12. Gothic Dream - Dawnseekers (John Johnson remix)
    13. Till We Meet Again - Push (Album mix)
    14. No Hesitation - VDM
    15. Cloudwalking - Pulser

How many of these songs do you recognize? How many of these songs have appeared on the radio? How many of these songs have been on annual cheese trance compiltions? (which i dont mind, but thats besides the point) Only a few, with Silence being one of them, just becuase that is one of the BEST reworks ever made in trance.

But if you take ANY cheese trance compilation such MOS the annual 2004, disk 1:

    1. Love Me Right (Oh Sheila) cheese
    2. I Can't Let You Go Cheese
    3. Wilderness
    4. Loneliness CHEESE
    5. Satisfaction CHEESE
    6. Way (Put Your Hand In My Hand)
    7. You're A Superstar CHEESE
    8. Boys Of Summer CHEESE
    9. Cry Little Sister (I Need You Now)
    10. You're Free (Synth Mix)
    11. If U Want Me (Antillas Remix)
    12. Sunset
    13. Brainwashed (Call You)
    14. Passion
    15. Live Another Life
    16. Holding Onto Nothing
    17. X
    18. Love Shines Through
    19. One In A Million
    20. Make The Connection
    21. One More Chance

over 70% of those songs are over-played in clubs, played on the radio daily or made by artists who many consider 'cheese'. I started naming which songs are cheese, which MOST of them are, but you get the hint. Now im not saying any song that appears of MOS is cheese. In fact Ferry Corsten one of themost repespected DJs in the world used to mix the Trance Nations for MOS. But of course, MOS gave him a tracklist and thats what he had to work with.

Anyways, cheese or not, I Love trancE!

We're trying to understand something here, PersianMafia. I know for a fact that Tom doesn't regard Armin Van Buuren, Tiësto nor Ferry Corsten as cheesy. Because the one who does is a fool. :)

Having said that, you're right about what one should be look for. Even though I like my fair share of commercial trance too. At least, you know what you're listening to, hat avoids major dissapointments.

First of all I'm in total agreement that Tomcraft's loneliness is in no way cheesy. I think we have to find the subtle difference between "commercial" and "cheesy pop trance" - its clearly open to debate.

Of your list, first of all i don't recall exactly 'love come home' 'the music' or 'summer' so apologies for that :)

As for the others, I think the word cheesy would only describe scooter-nessaja, although clearly, with the exception of 'janeiro' they are all pretty commercialised tracks. Not to say I don't like them though, I think dee dee forever is a quality track, and I don't really care if its not on the 'cool' compilations, its simply a great track imo. Plus commercial tracks often have classy remixes

I see. :) On a personal note, I reject very few tunes but a thick Dutch accent can keep me off a track. At least I'd have preconceived reserves. Kate Ryan, Milk Inc, Ian Van Dahl come to mind here... Not every Dutch singer hurts your ear when snging in English though, which is quite fortunate since many artists in the business of dance music originally come from there. For instance, that Dutch singer who calls herself 'Do' and who you could hear on DJ Sammy's cover of 'Heaven'.

Ah yes, lovely voice imo. Not a great fan of the song although there's nothing wrong with it, just not my type.

Kate Ryan does some stuff in French if I'm not mistaken (?) I remember one of her songs in English was pretty good, heard it last year though it was probably out before..can't remember the name.

I'm not really that good at picking up accents on tracks but I see where you're coming from, though I suppose the music is if foremost importance. Then again an annoying voice can ruin a quality trance track. Try Three drives - greece 2000, quality tune, irritating to hell voice. Shame..thankfully i have the version with no voice :D
