I remember posting 4-2-3-1 in November and getting shit for it.

But even now after we've tried it, I still feel it's a bit of fool's gold. The original one I posted has Dybala on the right and Cuadrado on the left which sent certain members into a seizure. But I would still love to try that. The more Dybala touches the ball on the left corner of the box and the less he touches it anywhere else is ideal.

Dybala is not a CAM. I admit I wanted to see him there but the experiment is complete for me.

Against big teams I don't think this current setup will hold up.

Pjanic is doing well at CDM but it's a job that both Marchisio and Khedira can do. They've done it their whole careers.

Pjanic is not making passes from the CDM area. The only time he's providing key passes is when he's in the final third. Which is understandable. I'd still like to see him there more often.

Its not about the formation you posted, its about where you placed Dybala and Cuadrado. Allegri found a way to keep Dybala as close to Higuain and the goal as possible, finding the perfect role for Pjanic, and having Mandzukic in there to compensate for lack of grinta in midfield. He also has Cuadrado in his best role so Its different from your idea.

Its not about the formation you posted, its about where you placed Dybala and Cuadrado. Thats actually what I thought we are playing when I 1st saw the lineup for our 4231, just replace Marchisio for Pjanic, Pjanic for Dybala and Dybala for Mandzukic

Essentially a 4-3-3 except the two forwards are positioned slightly behind Higuain and would have more freedom to either cut inside or go wide. A slight variation of the 4-3-1-2 that was highly successful in the 14-15 season, but it needs another creative persona on the left (Sanchez) and another midfielder (Tolisso). It could suit all the possible wingers too (Orsolini, Berardi) and our SS/CF Dybala, and this formation would also be ideal for Higuain.

Do you guys think we need to switch up the formation from time to time? I see why we might need to do this to maintain tactical versatility as well as having a healthy rotation policy throughout the squad. (the current 4-2-3-1 only allows 2 CBS and 2 midfielders, leaving 3 CMs and 3 CB's on the bench while having 4 of our 5 first team attackers playing constantly).

Playing Dybala as this authentic AM is like playing Del Piero there - the quality is undeniable and the talent will shine through for moments but essentially both players are better coming from a pocket offset from the centre of the field.

I don't get this "against big teams this won't work" narrative. We are defensively more solid with this formation than we were with three at the back. Also the problem with Dybala playing wide isn't the attacking part of the game but the defensive. I really have my doubts about how useful he would be if he had to use all his energy trying to keep up with an offensive minded left back.

Dybala can easily grow in to the role he is playing at the moment and already is showing promising signs.

Thats the most glaring drawback of this new formation for now.... is that we didnt prepared the summer spending for this since it was not in the plans, and now we find player like cuads higuain and dybala having no subs.ç

Im hoping this will not cause us problems in the coming months... but maybe we will have to go back to the 352 from time to time if the aforementioned players get burned.

Coming the summer, we will be able to buy the players we need to rotate dybala cuadrado mandz and higuain. Lets hope everything go smoothly and we do not have major injuries until then

If you are worried about him tracking LBs then you should be worried about him fighting in the center of the pitch because if we face Real, Bayern, even PSG, then he is tracking the likes of Modric, Thiago, Verratti, etc. They could run the game if he's not putting in a shift.

As far as defensively, right now we are using 2 CBs and 2 CMs whereas before we were using 3 CBs and 3 CMs. There's no question for me that it's shakier *when we don't have the ball*.

Right now we are fine defensively because we have the ball. If we face a top team, our possession will decrease, we will have to chase the ball. Can we do it like this? I'm not sure. I'm not saying go back to 3-5-2 though. But I would like to see Pjanic at CAM maybe. A little more balance.

The other issue for me is Mandzukic at LW. Can he take the space behind the RB when we are forced deep into our 3rd? I don't think so personally. He will track defensively but if we are winning the ball back deeper in our half against a big team, then his usefulness decreases offensively.

Dybala's job defensively in this formation is mostly based on pressuring the center backs and the defensive midfielders these players are much more static than the modern roaming full backs. Of course he's putting in a shift like he has done in every single game thus far but there's a huge difference between being used as a pressuring player who's defensive duties are more based on zonal defending than having to man mark someone on the wing going up and down.

All the evidence completely trumps this claim. We have been way more solid at the back with this new formation, which has been both visible in stats an by eye.

We have already faced equally as tough oppositions as we faced with the other formations like Milan (lost two games to them before the formation change) and Inter (lost a game to them before the formation change). We have conceded only 3 goals in 8 games after the formation change, as I said everything tells us that you are completely wrong here. When it comes to Pjanic he has performed best in his current position don't see any sense in trying to move him around again. We've even seen that Allegri prefers to utilize Marchisio higher up the pitch when we've had three central midfielders on the pitch.

Mandzukic has been one of our most consistent performers in this formation, why would that suddenly change? He isn't a fast counter attacking player but we have other capable players who can carry that torch. Mandzo brings us good hold up play, immense work rate and defensive solidity. Alex Sandro is more than used to and capable carrying the attacking responsibility of that flank while Mandzo comes inside to make space and adding a body in to the box.

The start of the season is going to very exciting, our new transfer acquisitions, give us new tactical options. We are likely to change formation. Surely use a more aggressive one, hopefully more attractive to see and more effective in goal scoring.
With the amount of attackers we have messed, it's pretty safe that we will see some form of a trident.

Why?

Tactics, sure, but I wouldn't imagine us signing more wingers suggests we want to move away from the 4231.

We are evolving, we have added an extra CF, without selling one and one AMF/winger, possibly one more coming, while lost one wingback, possibly one or two more, without replacing them, smth is swifting towards a more agressive formation.
When Allegri tried to change from 3-5-2 to more agressive formations, he did it in a way to use the material at hand and have some depth, now we can build upon that and add the pieces we need for the desired formation.
For example we were forced to use Dybala and Manzdu out of position and many times we had to use Sturaro as a left forward. I can't wait for the first friendlies!
