Usually Camo played on the right and Nedved played on the left. If we played with a trequartista, and we rarely did, Del Piero often occupied that position. We played several games with a Zlatan-Del Piero-Trezeguet tridente that way.
Lets put it this way, if Allegri names a team sheet of: Buffon, Lichsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Cuadrado, Marchisio, Pogba, Hernanes, Dybala, Morata. People wouldn't know what formation it is because there are so many iterations of it based on those players. I think that is the one thing I like about the players he has at his disposal.
A formation with only 10 players? You forgot Sandro.
If you took out Lichtsteiner and put in Caceres, then you would be right in that the formation could change from 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3 at any time during the game (not 4-3-1-2 because Cuadrado is not CM, dont say because Camo occasionally played there, they are vastly different players really).
I remember that trident a couple of times but never very often, especially given the sulky Del Piero all season because he preferred Ibra (and his crappy goals return).
Was it more of a true trident, or playing Ale as right midfielder? Mutu got this weird position all the time, but recall Ale got the midfield wing position a bit too.

No, that was just Mutu. I even remember Mutu playing right midfield in a flat 4-4-2 against Milan (I saw this game live too), which predictably ended 0-0.
4-3-3 - Morata - Mandzukic - Cuadrado is better imo
3-5-2 - Lemina as Marchisio backup, Padoin out wide at the WBs as backup
4-4-2 - Asa and Padoin as backups for Pereyra/Cuadrado, but i doubt we will ever play 4-4-2 anyway
Cuadrado was a loan that gives us the options to play multiple formations (3-5-2, 4-3-3) and change formations during games. you could call Hernanes one, after we couldnt sign a better AM but not Cuadrado. he was in no way a panic move.

Our squad is good enough to do very well in Serie A and UCL.
It's going to come down to how well Allergi can manage such a large number of new players joining the team this season, identifying each of their strengths, and playing them in positions where their strengths will shine.
Every time I think of Capello, I become infuriated. That cunt had an amazing squad and constantly failed in Europe. However, some people praise him as a good coach with his insipid and uninspiring approach. Our team was sooooo fucking boring to watch during his era.
