As i see it, the problem is that there is a gap in the 3/4 of the pitch.Last year we had this problem too.
Think about it.
One of our attackers receives the ball with his back to the goal, outside the penalty box.He can not do anything as he is marked. He passes back to one of the central midfielders, then the ball goes to the flanks. And the best our wing backs can do when in possesion is an average cross to the box.

Remember Marchsio's goals against Milan and Inter in Conte's first season. They came through team play and combinations outside the oppontents box.Now the players don't even try this.

vidal or marchisio nrarely make penetrating runs into the box now. this was one of our biggest strengths and I have no idea why we stopped doing it.

I think they still do this, but they start their runs from too deep compared with Conte's first year, so the strikers are practically isolated for some time...

Way too long ago.

4231 is the way to go now, just look at the last two CL finals. Both were 4231 vs 4231
Only until another formation happens, then that is 'the way to go', and so on. If you are good enough and play it well you can enforce your system on any opponent, start a trend rather than follow someone else's.

This. You, me and @W saw the light just when no one else did :juventus:
Okay multiple people including me have been demanding a formation change.

Anyway, the thing I don't understand is look at how we played yesterday without any wingers on the field but instead we played with a fullback who can cross Caceres and our 4 best midfielders on the field. We pressed alot better than the rest of the games this season and we also switched play a couple of times and made some runs on the wings(gio and marchisio). With a back four we get the more attacking style of play given we have one less defender on the pitch. It is beyond me how it is being reported that once again aganist Genoa Conte will deploy a 3-5-2. If anything I though he would have tried the same formation and tried to sharpen it up given we have to play REal Madrid again in two weeks.

Buffon
Licht-Barza-Chi/Bon/Ogb-Caceres
Vidal-Asamoah-Pogba
Tevez-Nando-Vucinic

I really hope we switch to this permanently.
If anything Asa will be used as a sub and I don't see Pirlo being dropped just yet

Would Tevez have some sort of free role? Because otherwise, he's kind of wasted out wide. Having Asamoah in there instead of Pirlo would enable us to play that attacking trident against smaller teams but against strong teams, we'd need someone like Pepe to provide defensive covering.

yes, I had that in mind. He could easily drift in behind nando & mirko to make a kind of 4-3-1-2 if needed, also helping to close the gap between mf & attack. Mirko could also do the same at times.

I don't see why we couldn't play that vs big teams. we might as well play a 3-5-2 if we are going to use Pepe on the wing.

Not enough cover for our fullbacks, we'd need at least one of our wingers to track back.

Like I said, he's wasted in that position. Better have him with a free role on the left and have a quality RW who tracks back a lot(someone better than Pepe, ideally).
He could probably play both roles, but anyway Pepe is still injured, who knows if he will ever even be back. It's probably the best we can do atm.

i am not convinced by this whole defensive winger BS

how many teams in europe top teams play with a defensive winger?

madrid
barca
united
chelsea
city
psg
bayern
dortmund

none of these teams play a defensive winger to help out the defense. they all field one DM to win balls. that's it

with asa, pogba, and vidal we would have 3 dms that can win balls. you don't need a defensive winger
