Defense is very much a no brainer. With Sandro being offensive allowing Dybala to cut in and cause havoc we will need solidarity at right back and Howedes fits that role. Also helps the central duo and takes some pressure off.

Midfield is a good mix...technically balanced with a grinta type, technical type in marchisio and pjanic passing the ball and doing what he does best.

Bernadeschi offers the width but is capable of cutting in and creating and linking well with dybala. Again dybala is allowed to cut in and run a muck as ADP used to from that side. Sandro is a key for us and will continously offer width in the attack and cross well.

Higuain for me needs more service. Dybala being closer to him and the goal is a must. Bernardeschi will offer more service and of course pjanic having marchisio and matuidi in midfield will allow him to be more adventurous from midfield.

We have good cover on bench as well. MDS can cover both FB roles. Plenty of CB cover. Midfield options with khedira and bentancur offer plenty of options. Costa mandzukic pjaca offer plenty of options as well in that final third also.

Makes sense to me anyway.

Disagree...may not be right footed but the notion is he can link with Sandro out wide, drift centrally and link up with up with the likes of pjanic and costa or bernardeschi. It offers him a role closer to goal where he is more dangerous. He wont have to drift deep in midfield to get the ball. He will have more freedom and space to find the ball and run at defenders instead of being deep, getting the ball and constantly having his back towards goal.

Not a big fan of 3/5 defenders. Used to not care, and I still do not care as long as it brings us trophies. But I am growing more uncomfortable with seeing three defenders trying to be creative with each passing game. I am not talking about Juve specifically, this goes for all teams.

In theory, I think 3-4-3, 3-5-2 or whatever, works well. You get the width, you get a lot of players in the central parts of the pitch, and you get a more solid base against counter-attacks.

In practice, you still get the width, but you also get all players on the pitch centrally (including opponents). It's just swamped. Nevertheless, I still believe the biggest problem, as I said above, is the issue with having three CDs trying to find open slots and run down the middle. Like Italy vs Sweden when Chiellini became "the main threat" for running with the ball forward and trying to do something creative or cross the ball. Of course, nothing ever came of it. Yesterday watching Benatia dribble, Barzagli making runs into the box as well as Höwedes. It was just... appalling. Of course in that particular game it was countless of other issues that caused these events to happen. However, we still see that happen in all teams playing with 3 CD. Those that actually get a "creative" CB that actually can link defense with midfield or attackers (players such as Bonucci and Luiz) still get brain farting CDs that are somewhat good passers but poor defenders. You just outnumber possible attackers in a counter-attack instead of being left 2vs2/2vs1/2vs3 in a four-back backline.

Therefore, despite our defenders, I would prefer us playing with a backline of four but ask our right back to "keep a low profile" and only venture forward when the risk is low and mainly to stretch the opponents defense. I vote for Chiellini and Rugani as our main CDs, let Rugani grow. Barzagli is past it and Benatia is just... well I am not so fond of him.

I genuinely think that we have one of the deepest squads in Europe. Apart from Real and maybe Bayern, I don't think any other team has as much depth as we do.

I believe Dybala as a winger, a la Messi, makes sense. As an AMC he isn't exactly close to the goal anyway and always need to track back/go deep to receive the ball. So far he hasn't exactly excelled when receiving the ball in the middle final third. Usually steps into a wall immediately and gets easily disposed of the ball. From a winger position he will still roam freely but is not as easy to mark and keep track of. Yes, as an AMC he has been roaming all over the pitch as well, but I would prefer him to start of as a winger and have us play with a three-man-midfield to better shield or defense. Against smaller teams we could easily put on Berna as a "CM" and let him move more freely and focus on attacking (hence he'd kind of be an AMC). If we moved to this formation we could finally let Mandzukic be a backup to Pipita, as a LW this year it just hasn't worked out. I think the competitors have also learned how to play against our current formation.

If Marchisio can't play, let Pjanic take that role and move Bentancur into Pjanic's slot. But let form assess if one of them perhaps should be out and replaced by e.g. Khedira. If that'd be the case let Pjanic/Bentancur play deep and Khedira take the more offensive position because that is where his qualities are and not in defense.
