Can you imagine how Darren Bent must feel? He worked hard this season and scored a commendable amount of goals and what does Sven do? Call up a teenager who sat on the bench at Arsenal for the last 5 months.
Exactly. I really feel for Bent and if Walcott fails, I hope Sven gets crucified.

Im not saying im glad walcott is in the squad, and i agree that bent should definately be there... (defoe i relly dont see the fuss about)... However, walcott is an interesting choice... an unknown quantity... and for once thoughi admit he wouldnt have been on my list (but then neither would defoe) I agree with sven when he says that with a 23 man squad you can afford one risk... you never know...

Overall im pretty happy with the squad...
Defoe hasn't had a great season but he IS better than Walcott and that's a fact. You say that you can afford one risk in a 23 man squad but not with the problems England have upfront. Owen isn't 100% and Rooney is a major doubt. Even if they both make it who knows what their form will be like and if they don't make it your in serious trouble.

You can't afford one risk when you're already taking huge risks in the offensive department. Really, he should have gone with a certainty in the form of Bent or Defoe, who I admit is quite inconsistent at times, but seems to be in shape ATM.
Ashton is in better shape and more deserving than defoe...

I disagree... you can allways afford one risk... Chances are barring injuries... he wont get more than a couple of minutes anyway... or if we are on the rack and out of options... He also along with lennon is one of the few we have with real pace... allways useful when its late and the lights are going down on you... Not that big a risk to me... Chances are cole and / or stevie will play an advanced role anyway...

Imho if owen and rooney are out, we will focus our play around crouch, with him being the point man for the likes of cole, lampard and gerrard to feed off. Beckham and carrick will play the deeper roles with beckham possibly drifting wide from time to time.

It will require lamps and gerrard to do a lot of work to both support crouch and carrick effectively.

It will work....in a weird way, loosing owen and rooney may be a blessing in disguise...allowing our best midfielder to be more effect, but also sure up the defense with a holding midfielder.

Dont be saying that Stu..you may not totally support england, but you cant wish a professional to fail for a national team....a wee bit harsh.

If Ashton is more deserving than Defoe then he's also more deserving than Walcott. Everyone is more deserving than Walcott actually.

As sven indecated, he could see no logical reason for wallcott to be more deserving. But he is a gamble he wants to take.

It's not because I don't like Walcott but because I want Sven to look like an idiot on the world stage.

Walcott is the wild card... deserving or not is irrelevant...

Bent should have been in ahead of crouch.. and ashton in reserve to replace rooney when it is finally confirmed he is not going...

As for wishing ill on a 17 year old kid... thats a bit low...

If losing Rooney and Owen means that Carrick gets to start then wonderful.

seems to me sven is promoting himself, as the guy who "found" and gave theo debut in NT. taking a big risk by including such a inexperienced guy in case either rooney or owen will 100% fit. but who knows it might turn out right, but what i don't understand is why he picked owen hargreaves. just an average joe in my eyes. doubt that a british manager would have picked him, but you english fans outhere are welcome to comment on that

Can't say I hope Walcott fails, because I like to see any 17 year old play great on a World Cup. I'm sorry, but I just love it when these young prodigies go mad :D.

@Paul: when you don't have too many options in attack I don't see why you go with yet another risk there. He could have at least selected five strikers, no?

BTW, a wild card might be alright, but give it to some youngster who has at least played some games. What about including Pennant for one?

Walcott in all honour, having two injured players and a pole up top, you'd expect some more reliable option available. I'm excited to see that Theo will play, but not on the expense of players such as Ashton, Harewood or Bent who've all had great seasons. Considering Walcott can also play winger, I would've liked to see him take Hargreaves place instead since there are four other central midfielders in the squad already.
