I said, as is. As things stand, we haven't improved, not at all. Hence, if we stay as we are, good luck winning Serie A, let alone competing in Europe. The way we have been operating in this mercato is so haphazard and fucking frustrating. I hope we aren't going to allow the Berna affair to drag on all summer while neglecting other urgent requirements.
The thing is we did (considering that we already have Costa and we'll sign Berna in the end). We did, simply because we have good options to come in from the bench (can also be considered as starters, or with potential to be in the future). Finally we can rotate our main guys upfront. IMO both Costa and Berna are better than Cuadrado. That's an improvement, no matter how you look at it. Berna can also easily play in Dybala's role, that's also very important.

In the defense we're worse but mercato is still open and will before over a month from now. IMO we won't sign any new CB and just rely on what we have but for the RB we'll sign someone better than DES. Don't rate the mercato just yet while it's not finished yet. Show some patience :)

As for winning/competing - nothing should be taken for granted, never. We could've signed Sanchez and Thiago Silva tomorrow and we still could lose. Napoli is doing very well IMO, their squad is stable and Milan was always bound to come back from the misery they've been in for a couple of years. Roma got worse on the other hand and inter is still sleeping it seems. You can't much influence what the others are doing and tbh now matter what we do from now on - we're still huge favs to win the A and have a decent/good season in Europe.

The only constant is change. If we don't improve, others will, and will catch up to us. We lost two key cogs in defense, and have so far brought in a Bayern bench warmer, a Milan reject, and a goalkeeper. We probably need another CB, we most definitely need a top quality CM, and we need to buy another RB, in addition to another winger/versatile attacking player. This squad is nowhere near ready or good enough as it is now, to compete on equal footing with the best in Europe.
'Key Cogs' in defense is a bit of an overstatement. We reached a CL final without Dani too and deported Porto out of the competition without omnipotent BonBon. Other players grow too, I think that is the point of us buying 'prospects'. Another year riding the bench and we might turn Rugani into one of those everlasting prospects...

We just bought MDS, we should have 25m Pjaca ready and firing some time this year too and he must get at least 15 games. How? Not to mention everyone and their mothers know that Juve are looking for more players. I don't think you call that standing still.

More, I hope you read ADP's press conference (I know an outsider, a rebel legend :ultra: ), he says he expects us to sign a 'top player'. I don't know if anything like that will ever happen, but lets speculate and consider if we are after someone like Mbappe!? R9-esque player is standing still, while Big BonBon the world beater is a major loss...

I wouldn't expect any "top player" (the tuz definition of the term) this Summer. I say that simply because you don't have too many top players moving and if they do, you have to shell out 80-100m which we're not going to do, obviously.

I expect something like this: Berna, Cancelo, Emre Can/Matic + eventually some young attacking player/CF. In terms of numbers we won't need anything more than that, in terms of quality - you never know what opportunities could be there in a few weeks on the market.

Let's agree to disagree. We need a statement, especially after BonBon. Inter would be going after a top player and so would we imho...

PS: Perhaps Inter would get Martial. I don't think Mourinho rates him that highly. Otherwise we'd all be raiding the french...

Let's wait and see...
Sure. But we never spent big without sales, and there's no way:

- we'll get Mbappe without selling Higuain, cause Mbappe surely wouldn't sit on our bench, nor would Pipita
- I don't see clubs bidding 100mln for a soon to be 30 Pipita
- there's no way Bonucci's low transfer fee would be enough to bring Mbappe here, it's like 1/3 of it

imo nothing indicates we'll spend big and even if we do it surely wouldn't be CF position

...We are not desperate for players like back in the days...
we'll play 4-2-3-1, and our current starter lineup would include lichtsteiner/de sciglio, khedira and cuadrado. i'm fine with cuads baby as a weakest link in a starting lineup, but we clearly need improvements on both our rb's and cm's. also, our bench is weak, especially in the attacking department.

I think it's a stretch -- certainly not a fact -- to say that Dani Alves was the best right back in the world last season. The English/American pundits overdid the Alves praise IMO -- even if he was outstanding in a few of the European matches. He was terrible early on, then hurt. Had a very good second half -- particularly in a few of the CL games, although certainly not a strong final. Brutal in the final. He was also given a more attacking role at times later in the season; nabbed Cuads spot in a few, which didn't hurt his ability to get forward.

You're probably right, Sal. Love Mandzu, love the spirit, but this team could still use another good finisher, IMO.
We have a few variables now

Dybala can always play as the CF if needed as well

How do you see it working with all these lefties?

What statement do we need? We need to make statements on the pitch, not on the market. The only positions we can really improve right now is RB and CM. I highly doubt we'll spend insane money on these two.

Our team is stacked as it is. Sure we have holes to fill but it's not like we'll sign Mbappe or Sanchez now, give it up guys :D

Costa and Berna improve the situation up front massively. Pjaca will be back in a few months, he should be able to feature a bit as well. Kean might stay with us.

Provided Schick's problem is gone in 30 days and no one has picked him up yet does anyone think Juventus buying him and loaning him back to Samp is at all possible?

Maybe a top CM. But with Schick deal off and the speculations regarding Cuadrado, I wouldn't say we are stacked up front. Especially if we are playing 4231. I think forwards are the players that need rotation, since they usually use most of the energy in a top team. By Allegri words we paid heavily in the final last year because of that.

Well I was talking the arrival of Marotta days. Even still, licht/MDS is not that bad of a pair, especially if we reckon we can convert Cuads to an offensive fb.

Regarding CM's I tend to agree with you. Khedira is not my cup of tea, but most bit my head off when I suggested we sell him. Still we have the depth and we must make some sales, but we can get a good CM with the right sales alone.
