I guess Italian defenders figured him out. He can't really take them on 1 vs 1 and he doesn't has the top speed to outrun them either. So his only weapon are early crosses, which most are able to block easily.
If you put him in a position to cross then he can assist. He can't put himself there with speed or dribbling. End of convo. Football is just countless iterations of Occam's Razor.
