This is such a simplistic notion. It's about winning trophies for certain clubs for some other clubs football is about avoiding relegation or finishing in the top half. All clubs are not created equal.

You're talking about moral victories. Couldn't care less about those.

Personally, I don't believe that if someone doesn't get something the first time around then they never can or they will never become great at something. Whether someone becomes a good coach at 30 or at 50 doesn't mean much as long as they're good at this moment.

Just to reiterate though I'm just speaking in general terms here and not specifically about Gasperini.

But 50 is one thing, 63 is another entirely. I can’t think of coaches who have been successful at that age starting out at a top club. It’s nearer retirement age than anything. Not the age of coach you want coming to reverse the fortunes of an aging, declining, and underperforming squad. I want either an established top coach, or a young up and comer full of fire and energy.

He’s clearly a good coach who just took way too long to develop his tactics into something
effective and successful, which is why he never got hired by a top level club even when Italian coaches were all the rage around Europe 5-10 years ago. He’s aged out now imo, and should just continue doing his thing at Atalanta, which is impressive enough.

No, I'm talking about different clubs having different goals going into the season. The reality is that it's only a few clubs that go into the season with the goal of winning a trophy, the rest of the clubs have different goals. This binary division into losers and winners is stupid as well. Atalanta getting into the CL hardly makes them "losers".

Yup, last summer it would've been fine to make a bet on Gasp and find out whether it could work (and I really would've loved to see that, I believe Gasp has earned that chance and possibly could make us jump above our asses), but atm we can't afford any more experiments, we need long-term stability.

Winning is what people remember. It's all nice what they're doing in the moment, but unless they win nobody is really going to remember them outside of their own fans in 30 years.
