You can't fault Beppe if Schalke wants 35m for Draxler and don't want to give him a loan plus option/obligation scenario to feel out the players recovery from injury. You can't fault Beppe if Schalke expects him to buy the player outright with a substantial bid closer to 35m. What you can fault him for though is two things:
A) Identifying a player he has doubts about in the first place. And negotiate with him and get an agreement with his agent and then fail in the second step.
B) Assuming we are serious about the player, and knowing full well the importance of the AM in Allegris setup and claiming you want to acquire that player asap, then you could fault him for not being decisive enough in our approach by kicking off negotiations in an unrealistic manner if the rumoured 15+7m is close to the truth.
You are a big club DG, you are well within your right to play the market how you want, but if we are serious about a player then you got to act like a big club and approach critical negotiations with a little more clarity. If we get zgoetze from here on, then this would be a Moggi level manoeuvre, but if we get Sneijder, then Beppe is a little out of his depth in big negotiations.

My issue in all of this is not that Beppe offered 30 million and it got shot down. I wouldn't be upset in the least if that were to happen. My issue is that with his release clause anywhere from 40-45 million, he starts off the bidding at a base of 15 million + 7 million bonuses.
Now some are going to say "Well, that's 22 million. Not that far off. A few more million and then we are getting really close." IF that were the case, and Schalke were in the same frame of mind, then negotiations would be still be ongoing. They wouldn't have slammed the door in our faces. Was it the bonuses? Were they so far fetched and unattainable that Schalke truly felt there was no way they were ever going to see that money?
That is what upsets me.

A bit more on topic, the next weeks are gonna be interesting for sure, Cuadrado looking most likely although I don't think he's what we actually need. Can't come up with anything better available to us either though.
I feel you, it was the masterclass work of a professional lowballer. We didn't know what the Bonuses were about. Dybala, for instance, have to reach certain "goals" in order for the bonuses to be activated. So i can see how Schalke saw it as almost as an insult. The way i see it is that maybe he really isn't target #1 and Marotta just set a trap by making the lowest offer possible to see what would come out of it, and from there figure out whether he'd increase it or not.
But honestly, Sergio... Maybe this is for the best. I was looking this kid up and that was not his only injury, he was on the sidelines quite a few times actually. 150 days, 70 days, 13 days and then one week here and there. It seems like a lot for a 21 years old kid.
