This type of cross shaped saber has been used in the EU too , iirc , some sith lords have had it , specifically made to kill jedis i think . I am totally in agreement with finding a need for it though .

This is the design and it does make sense , because you can block your opponents blade between the hilt and the sword .

Just make it double hilted
