Thanks, really interesting. I love those old stadiums which slowly disappear unfortunately. In Italy you can still see many (their lack of safety is part of Italy's problem, as we all know) and in Eastern Europe (in Poland they are already replaced). The racism in many Ukrainian and Russian stadiums is disgusting though. Ironically, I do not think they see many dark-skinned people they hate over there.

The Romans got it right a long time ago. It even had the steep ranks of the Mestalla ;).

While in Turin the atmosphere in the stadium now seems to change for the better due to growing attendances and better acoustics, Poland might face a contrary development. The old grounds were small, stadiums were packed and dominated by hardcore fans creating great tifo and atmosphere.

In Italy, regulations for fans are now high, from the tessera to the rules for tifo accessories. What is lacking is the safety of the stadiums. In Poland, supporter laws are still at the beginning. Therefore, it is questionable whether bigger, more modern stadiums will attract more people. If they fail to do so, Poland may lose its status as being one of the best supporting countries in Europe.

However, at least for the inauguration of their new Euro 2012 ground, Slask Wroclaw managed to get its stadium sold out.

In the last 20 years many stadiums around Europe have been modernized and new laws have been passed leading to very different outcomes with regards to support. In Italy we have the tessera and banned away trips, in England we are forced to sit down on our seats and in Germany we have packed, safe stadiums, which have often lost the character of the old grounds we loved so much. I'm really curious to see how all this develops and as long as I can, I will visit as many concrete bowls as I can ;).
