I know it's a tired argument, but should you go to an unsafe neighborhood in the middle of the night where you might get hurt through no fault of your own? Speaking from principle, yes you should. Speaking from self preservation and risk management, maybe you shouldn't.
Point being that should someone decide to come after Messi, the only thing you can do is punish the lunge afterwards. You can't prevent it, you can't pause the tv right before and step in.

In those circumstances it was smarter not to take a risk. Madrid's players were seeing nothing else but blood and wanted to hurt someone. They didn't give a damn about a potential lengthy ban. You know, humans, emotions etc.
It was 5:0 and last seconds. Why take the risk?
Yes, in theory what Messi did was right. It's a game, it should be fun and it should be played fair till the end. That's the right thing to do of course.

You are comparing the dangers of the seedier elements of society to professional football players. Yes, money and fame says nothing about their character but the fact they are playing on a world stage in front of friends and family and potentially billions of others and that all of their actions will be seen by coaches, league officials etc. should guarantee some degree of professional conduct above lashing out like angry teenagers.

I understand your point. I'm not disagreeing with what you are suggesting if Messi was really in danger. What bothers me is that he even should have to worry about something like this.
Just last week, the Madrid players themselves handed down savage beatings to Ajax and a smaller Spanish team yet here they are behaving in a manner that should be far below the conduct of anyone who plays for such a team. It bothers me that this behavior is expected/tolerated in a game at this level.

Ronaldo for the sixth consecutive game against Barca flops terribly, he did well for the first 20 minutes, but faded away after that.
Messi had a great game yesterday, but to be honest, he was extremely selfish, over the past couple of years(starting from last season imo), ever since there has been a direct competititon between him and Ronaldo, he's developed something of a selfish streak, yesterday on two ocassions he could have passed to open teammates that were in better positions than him, but decided to try and make a shot instead.
I don't think Mourinho was ever humiliated like he was today, not only was his team demolished by their rivals, they were completely played off the park, it was like a training session out there, i just read that Barca played more than 600 successful passes, thats quite astonishing.

What a performance from Barca, never thought Real would get soo humiliated.
I can't see how some here can hate Barca that much, IMO, we are all football fans, well, in the 20 years I have been watching football, I never seen a team play the game better then the Barca I saw yesterday.
