China is actually against the south's independence as it complicates the already struck deals with the previously ruling north. But anyway, it was reported that the north and south sorted that out recently so China's concerns were held to a minimum but obviously they would prefer the "old Sudan" to this new coming one as they had the exclusive rights to all the wealth of that country back in those days.

Yep, that about sums it up. Though the last bit is likely to be hogwash.

Either way it will benefit the North.

To be honest we haven't really done much in Darfur. All our money is next door in Chad.
