Zizou,
I do admit that I may be pulling the trigger too early, but what I worry about is the attitude Moggi is taking towards Calcio Mercato and this may be detrimental to the team. Beside, I believe many of reports in the newspaper, especially the well-regarded ones, are based on solid insider info, and does reflect the team's transfer policy to
certain degree .
Firstly, Moggi has been taking "I am going to beat the market" type of attitudes in recent years. I believe this statement is genuinely true given his record of signings, contract negotiations and coaching appointment. He signed Appiah, Legrotagglie, Chiellini, Kapo, Zebina, Miccoli, Di Vaio signings out of nowhere. He surprisingly appointed Capello over Deschamp. There is no problem in being flexible and taking opportunity of chances such as Zebina and Don Fabio, however, there is real chance IMO that such transfer activity might be rushed and ill judged. More important problem with this kind of attitude is that Moggi in recent years have refused to sign players that are considered to be good in the market. God knows how many good players that we passed up in recent years, and I strongly believe that we could have signed them had we been more aggressive in the transfer market. I am not going to criticize Moggi being frugal in those years because we did have a core that was capable of competing but the quality of signings should be questioned. I reckon this is due to the fact that if you are going to beat the market 1) you have to extremely lucky and/or 2) you must have incredibly foresight. In 2 case, this requires unique way of evaluating and valuing players, I am not sure what Moggi exactly saw in Baiocco, Fresi et al. If the market in general thinks one is a good player, i.e Burdisso, Mexes, Ferrari, then the probability is he is indeed decent player. I acknowledge that Juve management are no dummies then again so are other teams. The matter of fact is it is extremely hard to beat the market for sustainable time, because markets to not always get it wrong, however frickle and irrational they may be. So if people thinks Mexes, Chivus, Joaquins, Torres, Rooneys, et al are capable players why not admit they are good players and buy them. It is perfectly plausible by economic theory to make rent even admist competition because of asset specificity. Mexes, and Ferrari IMO could have been a great value to the team, and inability to sign these players (in the case they join Roma) should be criticized. Because I reckon Moggi is trying too hard for those "diamond in the rough" as a way of showing off his ability.
I am going to wait until the transfer deadline but I really do believe that Moggi is on the watch here, and he better have good transfer campaign because they could be a lot of people that are gunning for his head. Not that I am wanting this to happen but hey no one even GM is bigger than the club.
