and come next week our options will have been narrowed down even further when the CL qualifiers commence and half of the decent defenders out there get cup-tied.

Looking at the squad, in order to be competitive, we need a couple of good fast young centre halves, probably another full back, at least one winger, a creative midfielder and another striker. Moggi's got a lot of work to do but I can't see it happening.

I think we need 2 CB and a striker and a creative midfielder but that might force us the play attractive football for a change, so that won't happen.

Juve: We were offered Mutu
Sunday 8 August, 2004

Another development in the Adrian Mutu saga has emerged with Juve’s claims Chelsea pushed the player towards them.

“Juventus have never put in a transfer request for Mutu,” announced director general Luciano Moggi after the deal fell through.

“Chelsea offered us the player on a free - and I'd like to underline free - loan spell with the option to buy at the end of the season."

"After we accepted an initial approach and agreed to begin talks, the Premiership side thought it was in our interests to buy Mutu. At that point our answer was no.”

This is not the way that the press in both Italy and England had pictured the scenario, as it was reported the Bianconeri called on Mutu as a replacement for Marco Di Vaio.

Notoriously wily director general Moggi has been known to play the press with contradicting statements, so newspapers aren’t reading too much into the comments.

However, if Chelsea were offering Mutu to Serie A sides then that makes it increasingly likely he will make a return to the Peninsula this summer.

Fiorentina have confirmed they are still interested in the former Inter, Verona and Parma striker and would be able to afford the £7m buy-out clause.

Montero was very good during Coppa America. Many say he was the best defender in the competition.
