In a game like today (well, first half especially), where we were in complete control--high pressure winning the ball back instantly after losing it, and keeping possession for large spells, he's more suitable than guys like Krasic and Elia. When we have to chase a goal with not much time, we're better off without him. Crossing is shit, can't dribble, can't create. He makes good movements, retains the ball well, presses like no other on the team (except Vidal) and of course, has his famous work rate.
I don't know where you got that conclusion from. I agree with your assessment of his abilities, but I would rather have him on when we need a hard worker, someone to chase and harass. When the team is on top he is a total liability in possession and frequently ruins attacking moves.

His assist tonight was sublime but that's not typical Pepe. No matter how hard he runs I still don't think he's good enough to start.

He's not better than someone like Quag, and I'm not saying he should start over Quag (fuck Krasic and Elia), but we wouldn't have been able to press as much as we did without Pepe. Quag might give us more and better qualities, no doubt, but Pepe was important to the way we played in the first half and did a lot of good dirty work in the second half. I do see value from him in our team and he can be appreciated more when he's playing alongside skilled players like Pirlo and Vucinic who are not merely "try-ers". It's when he's playing in a team full of runners without inspiration like Delneri's team, you can really hate him because he's not much use at all.

He's still too detrimental to our attack. Perhaps if we had a player on the left who was more likely to score than Vucinic it would be less of an issue but that's not the case.

Dont think he was awful, fairly useful out there, but not as a winger, it says everything about him that it was his task to cover for Lichtsteiner who played like RW alot for a while, and did it rather well. Pepe was mainly busy covering the right flank defensively, then hounding everyt loose ball .
