A survey of about 600 scientists published this week found that a majority think it's time to consider conservation triage - focusing resources on animals that can realistically be saved, and giving up on the rest.

Those that fall into the too-expensive-to-save category, it has been suggested, might include the panda and the tiger.

So, should we give up on one endangered species to save another? Here, two experts argue for and against triage.

------------------------------------------------

Firstly ignore that survey - they give no details of who was asked, how many responded etc. It means nothing.

Secondly, where do people stand on this issue.

I am sure that i will feel differently on this issues to others on here having been to a Panda conservation centre, and seeing the hard work that gets put into looking after these majestic animals and trying to keep them from extinction. I was shown loads of film and documents about why pandas are failing and what is now being done to help, and the people really do put a lot of effort into saving them. After seing all of it and getting up close with them etc. I came out with the only logical conclusion -

FUCK PANDAS.

They are so beyond useless that its getting to the point of ridicule.

They are supposed to eat fucking meat. They did 2000 years ago and they randomly decided 'fuck what our bodies need for sustinance, lets eat bamboo' - something that doesnt even grow in the regions that they come from. (unless they climb up the mountains to the north east of szechuan) Oh and bamboo doesn't give them enough calorific energy to do anything but sit up for 2 hours to eat and then sleep the rest of the day. The keepers at chengdu said they try moving the bamboo around to give them excersise - but if they cant find it easily they just fucking sleep until the next day. Then the next problem - because of this ridiculous fucking diet they have chosen to eat - against there nature - they dont have enough energy to fuck, let alone be jacked of for artificial insemination. The last 15 panda births at the Chengdu facility have been born that way. Oh and when they are born, they come out about 30 weeks premature.

And they mothers have no idea what it is and kill them most of the time, unless the keepers get in there and save them...coupled to this is that the mothers have no mothering instinct - they have no idea what to do with the baby, and they have been recorded eating them babies after a few weeks.

Why are we spending MILLIONS trying to save this useless species that is forcing itself into extinsion - surely at this point we have to go 'fuck it'. The money could be spent on the thousands that do go extinct every year in the amazon due to deforestation. Something that actually is our fault and something can be done to stop.

Thoughts?

But then how else would we make youtube videos of sneezing pandas that get millions of views?
The chinese would support the conservation effort all by themselves - the government makes out it doesnt care and forces foreign agencies to pay for it - but the people of china fucking love pandas, they are on everything - drinks, beer, cigs, vending machines etc. All over the country. They are the main exhibit at every zoo they are in (and they have some rad animals in there zoos other than pandas). Also the chinese government wouldn't want to lose out on its favourate diplomatic gift - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda_diplomacy :sergio:

When do you decide that they are pointless? What is the cut off? We should try until they are all gone, they deserve it, our mistakes have gotten them there.

I have a kid in my year that looks like a panda, he's chinese (obviously), has got a big head (literally) and he's a genius. I don't think he does anything except eat bamboo and study.

Have they? did we force them to start eating bamboo and stop fucking? Bamboo is actually bad for them & against there natural digestive system but they refuse to eat anything else. Their bodies are designed to digest and metabolise raw red meats. Its like a species of stoners that only eat what makes them do nothing.

Deforestation of bamboo is such a poor argument, if you've been to szechuan you'll understand - bamboo grows mainly in mountainous regions, it isn't being deforested. In fact the guys at the chengdu facility struggle to grow enough of the stuff to feed the pandas in the centre, they have to import it from other regions that grow it for them.

As to the 'when do you decide if something is pointless'. You could give it an economic value - much the same as every human has an economic value (the UK gvt rates a human life as being economically worth £1.7 million). You can measure the value of each panda against what it is costing to save them. Or you could look at the way i am - you can't save an animal that is forcing itself into becoming extinct.

I'd like to open up a restaurant that specializes in panda meat. Should teach these fuckers a lesson about abalone & rhino poaching since they love their pandas so much.

I wouldn't necessarily go forcing animals to breed.

However, work should continue to try to prevent species being hunted to the point of endangerment.

Not sure, i just think they're endangered. It's really idiotic to believe that a friggin rhinoceros horn can make your dong stronger. What makes it even more infuriating is that they kill the rhino, when they could simply tranquilize the animal & take its horn.

if what you said is true. even though i don't like the sound of it.we should give up.not because it's impossible to save them, but, since, WE had nothing to do with them getting so close to extinction and that we are not the one getting in their way to increase their number. evolution takes its course, we have learned that various animals existed before us and they got extinct too so we can see that sometimes some species has come to their end.

I don't give a fuck about what they do with the pandas or any other endangered species, as long as i am not made to give any of my hard earned money for their cause.
