A survey of about 600 scientists published this week found that a majority think it's time to consider conservation triage - focusing resources on animals that can realistically be saved, and giving up on the rest.
Those that fall into the too-expensive-to-save category, it has been suggested, might include the panda and the tiger.
So, should we give up on one endangered species to save another? Here, two experts argue for and against triage.
------------------------------------------------
Firstly ignore that survey - they give no details of who was asked, how many responded etc. It means nothing.
Secondly, where do people stand on this issue.
I am sure that i will feel differently on this issues to others on here having been to a Panda conservation centre, and seeing the hard work that gets put into looking after these majestic animals and trying to keep them from extinction. I was shown loads of film and documents about why pandas are failing and what is now being done to help, and the people really do put a lot of effort into saving them. After seing all of it and getting up close with them etc. I came out with the only logical conclusion -
FUCK PANDAS.
They are so beyond useless that its getting to the point of ridicule.
They are supposed to eat fucking meat. They did 2000 years ago and they randomly decided 'fuck what our bodies need for sustinance, lets eat bamboo' - something that doesnt even grow in the regions that they come from. (unless they climb up the mountains to the north east of szechuan) Oh and bamboo doesn't give them enough calorific energy to do anything but sit up for 2 hours to eat and then sleep the rest of the day. The keepers at chengdu said they try moving the bamboo around to give them excersise - but if they cant find it easily they just fucking sleep until the next day. Then the next problem - because of this ridiculous fucking diet they have chosen to eat - against there nature - they dont have enough energy to fuck, let alone be jacked of for artificial insemination. The last 15 panda births at the Chengdu facility have been born that way. Oh and when they are born, they come out about 30 weeks premature.
And they mothers have no idea what it is and kill them most of the time, unless the keepers get in there and save them...coupled to this is that the mothers have no mothering instinct - they have no idea what to do with the baby, and they have been recorded eating them babies after a few weeks.
Why are we spending MILLIONS trying to save this useless species that is forcing itself into extinsion - surely at this point we have to go 'fuck it'. The money could be spent on the thousands that do go extinct every year in the amazon due to deforestation. Something that actually is our fault and something can be done to stop.
Thoughts?
