I don't know who can replace Essien against us in such a formation though.

I can see him using Mikel or Belletti instead of Essien. Possibly Ballack but that would leave their midfield a bit exposed.

Hiddink wasn't in charge of Chelsea in the cup game. He was in the stands sitting next to Abramovic.

Not that it means anything as I am sure Hiddink will implement the 4-4-2 as well. Chelsea's weakness is their flanks and with both Drogba and Anelka on the filed they will work a lot from the center as both have a high work rate drawing back, especially Anelka.

When Essien comes back I expect him to field a diamond midfield like this:

Whoever it is the trio Lampard, Deco and Ballack topped with Drogba-Anelka are very dangerous. The danger obviously comes from the middle. In that game alone I am not worried about our fullbacks, I am more worried about Sissoko and his partner along with the central defenders.

I would be tempted to play Poulsen with Sissoko to try and make us as solid as possible in midfield.

In case you haven't noticed Poulsen has not been that solid lately...Lets unleash Tiago so we can get some decent distribution out of midfield or Marchisio for more steel...whichever seems more necessary given the opponents...personally I would go with Marchisio

Del Capitano "tries too much" when the movement around him is shitty, so he has no choice but to slow down, hold the possession, or try to dribble.

They're thickheaded, they just post and bla bla for the sake of it.

do you know what footballers(these kind of footballers that are not to ball-loving) do in such situations?

the play the ball back to a teammate that perhaps a bit farer away from goal and instantly run to create space for the teammate or run into spaces to receive the ball again in a better position...

its called football not dribbleball ... a one-two is always the better way to pass opponents

If we're taking a cautious approach, I'd rather play Marchisio than Poulsen. Claudio's was on a very good run prior to getting injured and he is a high class ball winner. He also covers more ground than Poulsen and has so far shown that he gets stuck in more.

Poulsen was a very good defensive midfielder for Sevilla but so far he hasn't been able to show that for us. He might do one day, but I wouldn't risk playing him in an important game such as the Chelsea one. Not yet.

it is pretty debatable if poulsen was more of a risk in such a game... considering that he has quite a big international experience advantage over marchisio you could say that it is more safe to play poulsen, but everybody can have his opinion. inexperience could force ranieri to make decisions you would bash afterwards ... often inexperienced players are overmotivated in such clashes and get either sent off or do silly tackles that get them yellow cards pretty early, so they can not play not with full effort for the rest of the game. i did not see poulsen do silly mistakes so far, so i have the feeling that he would do better, because he has more physical power and seems to be calmer and more tactical aware. he does not cluelessly roam anywhere or try to dribble past players, so he does not risk creating a counter attack for the opponent. i must say that i like the tactical discipline that he shows ... he does stay back pretty often to be open for passes and only makes run into the box, when it is sensible...

I consider big game experience more important than form when picking a team for a game like Chelsea.

A bit of an open door, but a nesseassary reminder; let's simply see how the Tiago-Sissoko partnership performs against Palermo first and then weigh that in on whom to play vs Chelsea. I'm inclined to keep them both on the pitch. As well as giving Chiellini and Camoranesi the neceassary minutes to get in better shape ahead of the Chelsea game.
