Juventus talks up Serie A title chances ahead of match against Reggina
Juventus hosts Reggina in the fifth round of the Serie A Wednesday and the Bianconeri are already talking about the Italian league title.
"Our history demands that we win the scudetto," Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri said. "The pitch will be the only judge. But I can say that, after the excellent showing (at the weekend), we want to fight for the title right to the end."
Despite a year in the second division and a disappointing 1-0 loss to Udinese two weeks ago, Juve drew 2-2 at league leader AS Roma on Sunday to show it's still a force in the championship it has won 27 times.
"In terms of motivation, the draw was important for us," Juventus striker David Trezeguet said. "Now we must look ahead. On Wednesday, we must confirm our ambitions and win."
Roma leads Italy's Serie A with 10 points, followed by Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Atalanta, which are tied for second place with eight points. Juventus has seven points, the same as Napoli, Palermo and Udinese. AC Milan is next with six.
Juve shouldn't have any trouble beating Reggina, which lost 2-0 at Udinese Saturday to remain winless and a relegation favorite.
The Turin team has the best attack in the league with 10 goals, nine of which have been scored by a three-man forward line of Trezeguet, Alessandro Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta, who joined from Udinese in the offseason. Defender Giorgio Chiellini has the other.
Trezeguet headed in his 100th career Serie A goal to open the scoring in Rome and Iaquinta got an 87th-minute equalizer, after Roma's Francesco Totti scored two goals in seven minutes.
"Juventus is a great team and has an attacking capability of the highest level," Reggina defender Francesco Modesto said. "Iaquinta is a friend. I'm happy for him and for how well he has done so far, but we are hoping that he has a bad day against us."
Ranieri's only problem could be choosing his back line. Jorge Andrade shattered a bone in his left knee Sunday and joins fellow defenders Jean Alain Boumsong (thigh) and Jonathan Zebina (suspension) on the sidelines.
