[Serie A] Juventus vs Chievo (9 Viewers)

What's with all the sad and angry faces in here, earlier in the thread? No need for this sceptical and pessimistic nonsense at all. We comprehensively and completely dominated and had everything under control. Even Abbiati and Vieira after a nervy first touches settled it. Settling in... that's all what this teams needs to do.
We only won 1-0, after things get going after a few matches we'll be alright though. More than alright, great even. This team has some serious potential and some good balance. We need to work a little on our predictabilty and efficiency, that's all.

Excellent defending, so calm and collected. A particular moment- when the impressive Zambrotta, calmly dribbled and combined passes with Emerson(or Vieira) and Nedved to get the ball out of the defence.
Good midfield, I think the defence loves having such a block of Vieira and Emerson infront of them. Camoranesi AND Nedved had some effective and inspired play. Just what I want to see. After some promising teamwork, Zlatan and Trezeguet DO need to find some form together. Especially after the way the screwed up the certain 2-0!
Yes, Del Piero didn't get his time- even after warming up 40 minutes long, but I liked the gesture towards Zalayeta.

All in all,we won't have any easier and more polished wins,
we ONLY lacked effectivenis infront of goal as stated earlier.
Juventus likes to win with the minimum effort recquired(sentence, courtesy of Jeeks).

Anyway, on the players.:

Abbiati : Looked nervous at corner. LITERALLY never tested though, 0 shots at goal. Official stastics!

Thuram, Cannavaro and Pessotto: Inseparable. Unconquerable.

Zambrotta: Man of the match. Ditto defensively as the other defenders. Was the assistman though, great cross. It wasn't his only great cross in the match. Good combinations with Nedved and he was every so lively.

Vieira & Emerson: Every club is jealous of this partnership. Vieira looked unsettled at first, but was good in the second half in the second half. Needs to watch out with his fouls. Emerson in control as always. These two take all the work away from the defence! 7

Camoranesi and Nedved: Nedved is back, at least in this match. Great positioning and penetration. Good passing, finds his man.
Camoranesi dribbled lessed, but passes with precision and crossed excellently. Supplied the strikers well.

Ibrahimovic: Good first half, still needs to work on his shooting and heading. Some nice moves, tried some spectacular things in the first half.

Trezeguet: Great in front of goal, what a header. That volley was nice as well, even Chievo 'keeper Fontana clapped for that one. Apart from that he was very quiet.

We don't need Cassano!

Pretty uneventful first match of the season, certainly a rather boring display between two teams. We basically played at the same pace throughout the entire 90 minutes, which is seemingly status quo for Capello's Juventus. We had trouble finding the right passes and executing them, which is obviously due to the lack of match fitness and match experiance at the beginning of the season, but even our touches were very poor. That said, we dominated the match as Chievo really could not put anything together.

In the first half we had many decent chances to put the ball away, all stemming from crosses off the foot of either Camoranesi or Zambrotta. The wings were pretty much under our command, same with the midfield controlled by Vieira and Emerson. Chievo only threatened us once in the first half with Cossatto getting by Cannavaro and lofting the ball over Abbiati just wide of the post. We had very few nice moves during this match, however Zlatan and Trezeguet hooked up a couple times to only shoot just wide, and eventually Zambrotta made the pinpoint cross for a classic Trezeguet glancing header finish.

Second half was very uneventful and was dominated by bad touches and passes on behalf of Juventus, all while our defense held strong with Chievo not having much posession at all. Many times our players were not on the same page, or in one instance our players were not only on the same page but on the same line with Trezeguet and Zlatan getting in each other's way only to miss an easy goal. As you can imagine very comical occurances in this match with all the misqeues and bad touches. Overall I would not say we played badly but we certainly need to improve and I'm sure we will over the course of the next few weeks.

Abbiati had a few dodgy moments in the beginning of the match, dropping the ball a couple times and coming out to get the ball only to fail. Second half he was solid although not really tested. 5.5

Zebina played a couple minutes and I'm not sure what happened to him. No rating.

Pessotto came on for Zebina and played a good match, not making any noticable mistakes. 6

Thuram made a few saving tackles, including one in which he came out of the box to stop Brighi from taking an open shot. Good performance. 7

Cannavaro only made one noticable mistake as Cossato was able to get around him only to loft the ball wide of the mark. 6.5

Zambrotta had a great match running up and down the left flank. He was solid in defense, made a lot of nice runs, and set up the only goal with a perfect cross to David's head. 7, my MOM.

Camoranesi made a few decent crosses in the first half and was getting involved most of the match. 6

Vieira had a good Serie A debut for Juventus, making good decisions in midfield and making a lot of good tackles. I don't think he made any mistakes with the ball, and obviously we look better with him instead of Blasi. 6.5

Emerson was solid as well, however for some reason he looked sluggish and his touches were off. 5.5

Nedved was abolsutely horribe I'm afraid. His touch tonight was waaaay off and his passing was just as bad. Pavel seemingly could not make passes that he easily hit last year, so hopefully this is just lack of match fitness and not the continuous downfall of one of my favorite players.... 4

Trezeguet was very much involved with the match in the first half, getting in position to recieve crosses and through balls very nicely. He also made a few nice attempts only to strike just wide of the mark on several occasions. Certainly deserved a goal for his hard work. 7

Ibrahimovic did not look entirely good either, as his touch was off and he was not making good decisions with the ball at his feet. Passing looked horrible as well so he needs to pick his game up next round. 5

Zalayeta was on for a few minutes and gave the ball away a couple times. No rating.

It was a safe first match, however we have a long and difficult road ahead of us. Hopefully our lack of creativity will not be too much of factor this season, however we all know it will be and I can't help but feel it will cost us in some of the big matches, especially later on in the Champions League.

Trez was loving it in the first half with camo's crosses. Hes looking sharp, hope he can stay injury free, but i really doubt it. 2nd half didnt impress me at all. I disagree with Patricks rating i thought the boy done really good. He kept the ball moving all the time & never got exposed. We looked a bit too predictable at times using our right flank far too much with crosses. kinda reminded me of the Man Utd team when Beckham was there. same style. Spose they won the C.L so i shouldnt really moan.

I do not agree with the description of Nedved's performance. He indeed showed his great determination, however his touches were absolutely horrible. Same with his passing unfortunately. While Pavel was running with the ball he was tripping over it and fumbling around like I have never seen him before. Hopefully this is just a case of early season rustiness because he would be easily displaced by Mutu.

I concur that we had a comfortable win, however Chievo never looked like they were going to score apart from the first few minutes. We looked very rusty though.

Capello content with Juve start

The Bianconeri may not have put in one of their best performances, but Fabio Capello and David Trezeguet insist the result is what counts.

“At a certain point of the match I did get worried,” conceded the Coach following their 1-0 win over Chievo this evening. “The ball just wasn’t going in and we couldn’t double our lead. Our opponents are a good side and we couldn’t relax until the final whistle.”

Trezeguet’s header was enough to ensure Juve’s title defence started on the right track and goalkeeper Alberto Fontana prevented him from scoring more with some great saves.

“When you create so many chances and don’t make the most of them, there’s always the risk you’ll pay for those errors,” continued Capello. “I am happy with how the team played and our victory was deserved.”

Trezeguet was expected to leave Turin this summer with offers from Barcelona and Chelsea, but he netted their first of the season.

“The important thing today was to win,” noted the Frenchman. “It was a decent performance, even if we were a little tired in the second half and it’s always pleasing to score. Now we’ll look ahead past the break for international duty, but everyone in Serie A is working their way towards full fitness.”

Chievo had their fair share of scoring opportunities at the Stadio Delle Alpi, although they continued their unenviable record of having lost all nine Serie A meetings with Juventus.

“We should have put more pressure on them higher up the field,” said Coach Bepi Pillon on his Serie A debut. “The crosses into the box should’ve been snuffed out before reaching Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet. We had a great chance with Sergio Pellissier and, if we’d believed a bit more, perhaps we could have equalised.”

I would say scary. Untill we scored the goal we were dominating, and after the goal, we looked so cool, nearly uninterested, but Chievo didn't really got a shot.

I concur with every aspect of this post. Zlatan was not very good at all and I was waiting for Capello to bring on Del Piero for a bit. The communication between our two forwards was not very good, however they combined nicely a couple times to threaten Chievo. And indeed, this was a classic "we won, thats all that matters" Juventus performance. As I stated earlier, we should take Chievo to the cleaners with their crappy performance.

By the way, how dodgy was Abbiati!?!?! Tell you what tho, that boy wants to start learning how to catch a ball instead of punching it cos we'll get burnt if he keeps going on like that. He's got the advantage in using his hands, whats his problem? Or has galliani & Milan given him strict orders to be dodgy so we can lose a few points till buffon comes back. Think im reading way too much into this!

if capello had allowed it Juve would have scored 4 goals easily before the goal we were so dominating and Chievo didnt even come close to us the whole game its just capello's defeseve mind that hold us back

I do agree with my description of Nedved. You're being overly critical. A little scepticisme for the sake of, no offense. Nedved's first touches weren't all that great, but he always had his way of doing something usefull with the ball. That applies to his passing too, he had some really threatening crosses. Ofcourse, he wasn't the Nedved of 02/03 nor as good as Camo, but still an effective Nedved.

Chievo never looked like scoring, because we did not allow them to.
