He played there for much of last season both with Juve and the NT. He'd definitely prefer to play there than not at all. However, I doubt he'd be a success on the left under Capello. Trapattoni and Lippi allowed him ALOT of freedom when he played this role for them, he was almost playing as a free role left forward. Alex would fail as an out-and-out left winger and would disrupt the defensive discipline. If anything I'd try a trident attack and give DP the instructions to drift wide left with regularity. Trap tried this against Sweden at Euro 2004 with Del Piero, Cassano and Vieri and it worked.
@Zlatan;so what?he wasn't Azzuri captain but accepted to play at that role.anyway he doesn't like this role because he isn't a midfielder.but does it mean that he isn't a true captain?rubbish.
A true captain needts to play what the coach tells him to play and where the team needs him to play, weather he likes it or not. And Del Piero did refuse to play as a playmaker for Italy prior to WC2002.

he didn't refuse.Totti was Italy playmaker at those competitions.Alex was benched and you know against Mexico he came in for Totti.his goal made Trap to use Vieri-Totti-Alex at the same time.
He hated playing as a trequartista but AFAIK he doesn't mind playing AML. He played there last season when Lippi used the 4-2-3-1 tactic and did the same for Trapattoni throughout the Euro04 qualifiers.

Del Piero refused to play as a playmaker in a friendly prior to WC2002 but as far as I'm concerned that wasn't as big a deal as you're making it. Trap wanted him to play there in that much because Totti was injured, but Ale knew that as soon as Francesco returned he would be dropped. He thought it would've been easier to try to prove himself as a forward and he was right as he eventually forced his way into the starting line-up. He would never have done that as a playmaker because of Totti's presence.
