Juventus 1-2 Roma
Del Piero 51 (J), Totti pen 68 (R), Riise 93 (R)
Stadio Olimpico
Gianluigi Buffon was sent off and John Arne Riise's stoppage-time header turned it around for Roma's victory at Juventus. Luca Toni's game lasted only three minutes and Antonio Candreva received his Juve debut.
So much was at stake for this clash, as Ciro Ferrara fought to save his job against the man he replaced two weeks from the end of last season. It was a head-to-head for third place and the Giallorossi were unbeaten in 11 Serie A games. Totti, Fabio Cannavaro and January signing Candreva were on the bench, but Momo Sissoko was back from Africa Cup of Nations duty.
It was -5C at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin and there was immediately bad news for Luca Toni, who pulled up with a left knee injury. He limped off shaking his head and was unable to continue. Totti wasn't expecting such an early setback and so took around five minutes to get ready and step on in his place.
Hasan Salihamidzic blasted over from distance, while at the other end Vucinic kept a difficult ball in play at the byline to cut in past Fabio Grosso and hit the side-netting.
Claudio Marchisio finalised a good move with a sweeping cross from the left that whistled inches from Amauri's head in the six-yard box.
A poor Nicola Legrottaglie clearance allowed Totti to fire over, while Amauri nodded wide from Diego.
On 26 minutes Marchisio ran on to a Del Piero through ball, but stumbled over his own feet and slipped in the box under pressure from Juan.
Amauri soared above the crowd to nod Grosso's cross inches wide of the far post. From a corner Legrottaglie also turned his header off target.
A free kick flashed all the way across the face of goal and Del Piero got the slightest of headers, but couldn't get enough contact to turn it in from six yards.
Del Piero did hit the back of the net just before half-time, but the offside flag had already been raised.
Juventus broke the deadlock with a truly sensational effort from Del Piero. A Diego pass hit Juan's foot and looped into the air, turning into an accidental assist for Del Piero. He watched it come down and placed a precise left-foot volley into the far bottom corner from a very tight angle.
Julio Sergio plucked Del Piero's free kick out of the top corner, but there was a scare when Vucinic was caught inches offside clear on goal.
Roma were pushing more now and moments later Grosso used his arm across Rodrigo Taddei's chest to block his path in the box, so the referee pointed to the spot. Totti stepped up and buried the penalty into the near bottom corner despite Buffon guessing the right direction. It was Totti's first ever goal against Juventus in Turin.
Del Piero dribbled past one tackle and fell right on the edge of the area under a second, but the referee waved play on, as Juan got the ball. Vucinic was again caught offside by a matter of inches when clear on goal.
Juventus gave Candreva his debut by replacing Grygera, so Salihamidzic went back into the defence.
Amauri's header was plucked off the line by Julio Sergio, then Diego chested the ball forward to dribble into the area, but Marco Cassetti timed his tackle perfectly.
However, from that corner kick Roma went on the counter and John Arne Riise anticipated Buffon on Taddei's long ball, forcing him into a challenge well outside the box and inevitable red card. Del Piero made way for substitute goalkeeper Alex Manninger.
The game seemed to be heading for a stalemate when David Pizarro swept a cross in from the right for Riise to nod across the face of goal from the back post. It was three minutes into the four of stoppages and sparked wild celebrations among the Giallorossi.
