OK, now that I have stopped jumping on the furniture and screaming around the house... time for my post-match report.
First of all, I picked Inter 2-0 since I saw no real reason nor motivation for Juve to win given all of the factors involved. Hambon called it in pointing out that the key to this match would be the midfield. The first 10-15 minutes were some beautiful Juve play with the midfield constructively feeding forwards for opportunities.
By halftime I was pretty happy with our play and felt we were playing a good game, regardless of the outcome. What worried me was that Thuram was playing a little too forward at times -- lunging and missing the play, exposing our flanks. And Balza was making long passes when we needed shorter, ball-control type passes from him. And we left Figo's marking at the wing by the open man -- so it was a rotation of bad matchups against Ibra, etc., who couldn't contain him very well.
Halftime saw some good adjustments on all these worrisome areas.
And sure, ultimately I lost another 100 vCash, but I'd lose 1000 for outcomes like this.
And for all the DP-vs-Ibra whiners out there -- here's proof that it's not an either-or situation: we need
both.
Kily Gonzales? Veron was something of a menace out there -- if not in direct impact of his play, ceretainly in the level of physical play he forced on the pitch. And when he went out: advantage Juve. Kily was worthless. The Interistas should give him the nickname "A-Kily's-Heel". He made Blasi look respectable.
Buffon - We thought we needed Super-Gigi. But with the midfield play today, all we needed was "Pretty Good Gigi" ... and we got it. 6
Balzaretti - Not bad on defense. The first half we left our wing defense too exposed, but he helped close that up in the second half. His decision-making for upfield passes also improved as he was more conservative. 6
Thuram - What a nut. Half the time I was worried that he was totally going to get us burned. The other half of the time his body was thrown in there in crucial last-man interventions before the ball reached Gigi. 6
Cannavaro - Generally solid game, though there were some stops he should have made. 6
Chiellini - This was one of the best matches I've seen from him in a Juve kit, and talk about timing. He didn't offer much offensively, but that was OK. What was crucial is that he really helped closed down the corner and made some great interventions. Even if Papparesta blew his yellow card call on him. 6.5
Emerson - Destructive from the rear as usual. He was the center weight of our midfield and largely was the key to this result, IMO. My MOM. 7.5
Vieira - Not great, but not bad. Could have been looking forward on some corners (like on the one Samuel scored). But better than lately. He's capable of so much more, though. 5.5
Camoranesi - Just when I said at half-time that we needed to get the ball to this guy deep on the wing, there it was and Ibra finished for the first goal. He's been more effective in the past, and I can't fault him for the lack of good balls that came his way down the corner. And when he wasn't in a position to cause a lot of trouble, which was often, he was drawing double teams and opening up other Juve players. 6.5
Nedved - Ran around a lot as usual, but as often happens his contribution was mostly in taking fouls rather than advancing the ball or intervening on stops. 5.5
Ibrahimovic - Some bad passes. A few occasions where he held on to the ball too long to obsess over his own footwork. But had a nice header to start the game and his finishing was there when we needed it for the first goal. 6
Trezeguet - Didn't really get involved in any decent shots on goal, but he did contribute in passing and ball control ... a bit unusual. Still, that's not his best role. But he wasn't being fed many great balls either. 5
Subs:
Del Piero - Sublime free kick for the game winner. Otherwise, had an OK match. 6.5
Mutu - Not really enough of a chance to make an impact. N/R
Blasi - Not really enough of a chance to make an impact -- which I see as a really good thing. N/R
Capello - The team was ready and up to the match. We looked crisp on offense and midfield -- moreso than we have in a long while. No long ball this time, folks. OK subs. 6
