Fabio Capello and Gigi Del Neri refused to discuss the controversial refereeing decisions that marred tonight’s showdown at the Stadio Olimpico.

“The images are clear and therefore I don’t need to say anything about the refereeing errors,” stated an ironic Del Neri after their 2-1 defeat. “The team played on level terms with Juventus and went behind on their first chance, but it was always going to be a masculine match.”

The tactician has now faced Juve twice and lost in both encounters, although it was an improvement upon their sluggish 2-0 loss in October.

“We certainly suffered a lot less than in Turin, so if we continue to play with this intensity and determination then we’ll go far. We had our opportunities and did everything we could to beat Gianluigi Buffon, so Roma proved that they deserve to aim for a Champions’ League place.”

Capello returned to the Capital for the first time since his unexpected summer exit and gave the Roma fans something else to rage about with this result.

“I do not wish to comment on the reception I received here, as there is no point offending people or hitting back. I just want to talk about football. It was my comeback to a place where I had earned some great results and was happy.”

“I think that we played a great first half, then Antonio Cassano’s goal gave Roma belief and both sides were very determined,” noted the ex-Roma boss. “Perhaps our mistakes in the second period when on promising counter-attacks let us down, as we could have easily won by more goals.”

This win keeps Juve on top of the table on level terms with reigning Italian Champions Milan and the Scudetto race remains incredibly tight.

“We knew that Milan had won, so it was even more crucial to get past this obstacle. If the Rossoneri get more points and are better than us by the end of the season, then we take our hats off to a side that never gives up.”

Real Madrid drew with 1-1 with Valencia tonight and fell off the Liga pace, so Juve’s confidence is boosted going into Tuesday’s second leg tie.

“Real are very similar to Roma in terms of their style and quality, so we need the same determination and humility as tonight,” insisted Capello. “The most important thing is to be concentrated and not concede a goal, which means being focused until the final whistle.”

Alessandro Del Piero netted his third goal in two games, but the captain was substituted early into the second half.

“Del Piero’s replacement was a tactical choice, as he couldn’t chase after Mancini and the team was overall rather tired, so I needed someone more defensive in that role.”

Antonio Cassano has already been linked with Juventus in the past and before the game admitted he missed Capello and wanted to work with him again.

“Cassano said what he was thinking and in my book we should all respect those who speak their mind in an honest fashion,” he concluded.

Giallorossi director Rossella Sensi, the daughter of ageing President Franco Sensi, also hit hard at the controversial refereeing decisions that were made during this game.

“Roma deserve respect and although I accept that the errors were made in good faith, they should be more professional in these situations. These were serious mistakes that damage our campaign and our chances of qualifying for the Champions’ League.”

Fabio Cannavaro opened the scoring from close range and laughed off the Giallorossi’s complaints of pro-Juventus favouritism.

“There are refereeing errors for both sides and it is part of the game, but when there is a mistake that favours Juve it’s as if the sky is caving in,” noted the defender.

romanista you really seem to be a nice dude,
its nice to have another point of view,
please dont take any of the stuff i post as personally insults,
btw i have two questions:
1- what the roma funs were singing on zebina and helped him to make a great performance?
2- it was a big rain before the match? the pitch wasnt soo muddy, it had an effect on the game speed?

Anyone got any clips/pics of the incident between Del Piero and Cufre? I saw a bit of it, but no physical contact.

And Cassano pushing Camo late in the game was dumb. Thought camo was wasting the clock. I hate Cassano.

why he wasnt wasting the clock????

he was near the side line

a normal player would have just roll to the side of the field

not camo tho

he got lay back down did a little dance

Cassano was right, that what happens when ur in a passionate competative match like this

Full of tense and gosh, those romans hates us a lot!

I like Totti's facial expression when he shook Emerson's hand before the kick off. :howler:

lets just say zebina was a little *****(nough said about him)
I know you hate Zebina now and I guess we can't blame you for that, however he played a great game while being targeted by Totti and the fans.

the penalty shot was bull shit in more ways than one
Yes, that should not have been a penalty. However the referee was behind a few players, obstructing his view of the box and the infraction. I think the linesman would have seen it though, but he did not speak up. Shit happens.

i know the zlatan goal should have stood but that doesnt even things out
In the end of the day it does even things out. If the score was 1-1 going into halftime Juve would have come out for the second half attacking, not sitting back like we did. It's difficult to say what would have happened, but I doubt the scoreline would be something other than 2-1 for Juve.

both teams played hard and physical thats ok
One team was playing physical, the other taking cheap shots. You must admit that Totti and Cufre were dirty on the night, especially the latter basically running into the back of Zebina. Even Totti went in cleats up a few too many times. I think Roma was much more dirty than Juve on the night.

monty was being a little much camo should have got his argentine ass of the pitch when he was hurt
I don't understand the problem here. Camoranesi was clearly injured but Cassano was pushing him off the pitch. Don't you lot know what injury time is for? Pushing around an injured player is unacceptable.

theres no point in talking about the officiating, it was a joke
unexceptable at this level of football and in a game of this magnatude
Indeed, it was a major joke. Too many silly fouls called, too many wrong decisions made.

Vin, I was one of those who were pissed by those subs in the other games, but this was different. It had too many reasons. A backup for the midfield was needed a lot. True we got lucky in the end, but we also missed lots of counterattacks and we could have scored more
Tacchi was the better choice IMO

Buffon - Didn't have to that much. Did what he had to do. .Was positioned well when Roma shot wide, except maybe for Totti's powerful header, but that wouldn't have been his fault. [6.5]

Zebina - Impressed me more today helping out the attack in ithe first half and doing well on counter attacks in the 2nd. He hussled extermely well and was relatively cool. I liked how he was covering up things in the central defense when Thuram and/or Cannavaro were out of position. He also did well implementing the offside trap. Unusual for him. At the same time, while he was positioned well, he almost scored two own goals. The first, the ball came pretty unexpectedly towards him and it hit his leg and went wide of the goal. Lucky really. The second one was even more dangerous. he kicked the ball towards goal, but lucky for him, it landed right in Buffon's arms and the ref didn't count it as a passback. Lucky again. Extra points for having to face his former team and having to put up with all the wistling. [6.25]

Thuram - What a rock in defense. Made some awesome last-gasp tackles and was ice cold ( "ice cold" [/man from distance ]). Loses half a point for Roma's goal. Too bad he made one bad choice. He chased the ball instead of sticking with Cassano who pulled the 1-2 with Totti that lead to the goal. Canna had Totti covered. Blasi made the same error. Damn good for someone who was comming up with the flu [7]

Cannavaro - While Thuram did the "distance" and more "smart defending," Fabio did mostly the dirty work of jumping, marking, and hastling their attackers (specially Montella). I love his strength and fighting spirit. It's so great to have a guy like Cannavaro on a team. It amazes me how he fights so hard (in the air too) while always looking composed. He makes the sloppy defending look so great. I love his attitude. He gets and extra .5 for scoring a tough goal that most strikers wouldn't be able to score. [7]

Zambrotta - By his standards, his game was quiet. Didn't do that much in attack. Tried to outpace players a couple of times but always lost possesion. He tracked back well enough though Roma didn't play much on his side in the first half anyway. Got more action defensively in the 2nd. Not bad, but not not great either. [5.75]

Pessotto - Did well. I thought it was very strange to see him in the middle of the pitch. Hustled well when he could. Obviously very slow, but it's amazing to see him keep a consistant form. He's always been consistantly average when playing regularly, and now he continues to do so when being a sub. [5.5]

Emerson - Husstled very well. Made some good tackles and was mostly responsible for stopping Totti. Another good game. Extra .5 for facing his former team and facing all the boos and whistling. [6.5]

Blasi - Looked bad today because everyone was a dirtly little Blasi out there tonight. While everyone else did "dirty work," he was the only won not to provide something extra. He's not good going forward and his touch wasn't great. Did help out the defense though, and when you face someone like Totti, your job isn't that easy. [5]

Camoranesi - Every time I watch Camo this season, he impreses me more and more. He has provided so much help for the team this year, yet he still doesn't get the recognition he deserves. You would swear that he isn't the same person from last year who made all the wrong passes, had the worst first touch, was lazy, complained a lot, and most of all, surpassed DP as being the most inconsistant. He really deserves his starting spot for Juve now. Excellent ball control, smart passes, great crosses, extremely helpful dropping back and defending. He fought so well, yet complained so little when receiving tackles. [7.5]

Zalayeta - I thought he did fairly well. He could have done better when he had a clear shot towards goal though. [6]

Ibrahimovic - Why the hell Rai sport gave him a 7 rating is beyond me. He made one or two moves for 80 minutes. He had a ligit goal disallowed, but it was only a tap in really. His passes were Camoranesi-2003-style! This guy needs a break. Get's an extra .5 for his header that lead to Fabio's goal and his ligit goal. [5.5]

Del Piero - had some bad touches. Fell down when being slightly shuves (as usual) and really didn't make any shots towards goal. He made an uncharacteristic faul in the middle that lead to a yellow card. On the positive side, he did keep his cool when tackled, and he was composed (as usual) with his powerful PK. Overall, I think he did enough to not deserve any critizism from the Media. [6]

    Trez - No vote.

Capello - Got his tactics right, and IMO, made the right choices with Subs. Trez needed to get some playing time before Real Madrid. Zlatan wasn't doing much anyway. On current form, Zala kept the ball better than Zlatan. As for the DP-Pessotto sub, I think it was the right choice. Mancini has just come in and Juve needed more player playing out wide. Zambrotta dropped back instead of Pessotto because Zambro is a lot faster. Pessotto covered the LM and even CM because Blasi and Emerson were dropped back further. Great move.
As for Tacchi vs. Blasi, some members disagree with Don Fabio's choice and they suggested bringing Tacchi on instead. I disagree for two reasons. (1) We needed a faster player in a 3 man midfield to close down spaces. Blasi's a lot faster than Tacchi. (2) IIRC, Blasi is suspended for the Madrid game, so resting Tacchi was the best option. This might not count for a real reason, but I think Blasi has a cooler head than Tacchi in these messy games. [6.5]
    ............

I'll reiterate what I (and other members have been saying), we have no offensive midfield presence. When we see Zebina(RB), Blasi , and Emerson trying to penitrate their offense from the middle, you know that there's a huge gap. We miss Nedved, but we also need a natural offensive mid.

As for the bad refereeing, there's not really much to say. Juve scored two contraversial goals and the ligit goal was disallowed. Roma scored a ligit goal, but their players were too rough.
Cassano should have gotten a yellow for kicking the flag off. Cufre hit players who didn't even have the ball. Cassano shuved an injured player while the ball wasn't in play. IMO, and I'm usually harsh towards Juve, I think it all evens out. Juve were a bit lucky, but I don't see how Roma's play deserved a win, and by how their players acted, they didn't even deserve a draw.

    ............

On a more positive note, we finally won an important away game and against Roma nontheless. It's been too long really...
Also, I'm no expert, but for many patches durring the game, I thought I head Juve fans chanting and singing in between all those Romanisti.

PS It's comforting to see DP and Zlatan hug.
    ............

This should give enough boost for our players ahead of Madrid's game. While I continue to predict that this is our last CL game for the season, I think we'll give them a run for their money.
